Tux THuxpener,a British war vessel just launched, is thus described ina London journal “She is @ monitor, based upon the American models, but with variations introduced with a view of removing the more objectionable fea- tures of the monitor system. Thus, instead of having as low a freeboard ss possible, a height of four feet six inches has been allotted to the hull above the water line; the turrets, instead of being exposed, are protected by a powerful breastwork; and, instead of being constracted upon as small a scale as possible, she has been built on a scale sufficient to enable her to carry the unprecedented armament of four 35-tan guns, with the ty of storing during a voy- Spe ths extentions sospir ty tate or coal. With such capabilities as these she has a burden of 4,500 tuns, a length of 255 fect, and an extreme ‘breadth ‘of 62% feet; and, large as proportions are, one oi the few defects the Committee of Ships’ Designs find in her is that she is not large enough, atid that in future such vessels should be built upon a lar ither the Thunderer or the Devastation ee eee Reason WHY.—At the close of one of ‘Mrs. Swisshelm’s orations, she asked if any male ferred to the committee on resolu r. Herolson said there were but tw. ‘ies—the republicans and the demo @ Cincinnati convention was a demo cratic convention. Lieutenant Governor Pinch ‘k opposed the passage of the resolation.
