WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY... larch 20, 1873. The trio of Senators who have committed themselves to the Cincinnati convention seem to cluteh at the skirts of Mr. Sumner with the tenancity of drowning men. Within the last week he has had to contradict half a dozen as- sertions that he was about to pronounce in favor of the rebellion against the Philadelphia con- vention. Mr. Sumner is too old and experienced @ public man not to see that it is as possible to mix oil and water as to bring republicanism and democracy into any harmonious union at Cimeinnati. The fact that not a single republican member of the House, the immediate representatives of the people, can be found to join in the Cincinnati movement is ominous for the rebellion. The prompt disclaimers of Messra. Dawes and Garfield that they are in sympathy with that movement, is much more significant than the ace deed, of half the Senate. with all his ability and undertake to “row up Niagara falls with acrow- bar,” as to move the great republican current from its regular channel; and he knows the fact. The republiexn party feels that it never was stronger with the people than now, and that it hasno need to go to Cincinnati to cultivate “entangling alliances” with the demoralized odds and ends of other parties. It has, through its regular agents, fixed upon Philadelphia as the point to settle who shall be the next Presi- dent, and that is the end of the matter. The re- publican gandidate for governor is Marshall Jewell, and the democratic candidate R. D. Hubbard. Both are personally unexceptionable, and a decided vietory by either is not to be looked for.
