A correspondent of the Detroit Tribune de scribes at some length a fearful case of hydro- phobia, where the man was in convulsions, “barking like a dog,” frothing at the mouth, and making strenuous efforts to bite everything that came near. The doctors decided to place the patient under the same treatment which had been successful in a former case, which, for the aid it may be to others who suffer from this treatment, we here give, as tollows:—The injec- tion under the skin of large doses of morphine, and the administration of large doses ef castor, which is a powerful anti-spasmodic. About one grain of the sulpbate of morphine was in- jected under the skin once in four how ‘and . a half a drachm of the powdered mixed with syrup, given internally. ct was to produce sleep in about halt an hour, which lasted about an hour and a half, when the conynisions returned at intervals of an hour to an hour and a haif, until nine o'clock Sunday morning, when the last convulsion oc- curred, after which he suffered severely frow obstinate vomiting until Monday at ten o'clock, when that also ceaxed, leaving the patient com- paratively easy, but very much prostrated. ince that time he has gradually improved, and now is, to all appearances, quite well. In addi- tion to the above treatment small quantities of chloroform were inhaled at times, and on Sun- day morning the patient was wrapped in a woolen blanket wrung out of a warm solation of muriate of ammonia, eighteen to twenty grains to the ounce. This was the treatm. which checked this fearful malady, and which the doctors, for the sake of humanity, are anx- ious sould be published to the world, and thor- oughly tested. A Evrorran Mvepenet AREFSTED IN the 2d of no clew was discovered to the perpetrator 0! the crime, but in January one of the stolen shares was presented for payment at the bank- ng house of M. Liesen, in Brussels. Inquiries were made and the share traced to a Mr. Cow- ston, a London bi Mr. wston rected it from Dunea: herman & Co., of New York, and detective Farley was instructed to foliow up the trail on thisside of the water. He traced the share thrc ugh Charles S. Myles, who keeps a gambling establishment, to Charles Volte, who was recently staying at the Prescott House. Volte inthe mean time had gone to Philadel- phia, whither he was followed by Fariey. The detective found his man at the Petey Honse, and brought him back to New York last ar day. Other bonds stolen from the murdered man have been traced to the po: but the latter declares his entire innocence ia the matter, and says that he bought the shares in London. Comrrisory Pai ¥. ment of the boys at the Perkins ins the Blind in Boston has recently attracted at- tention in that city. It is stated thatthe worthy intendent of the institution has been in of plunging the boys every moruing, as they got up, into an ice-cold bath: Physicians have protested, but the superintend- ent was sure he knew all about it, and that the boys were all the better for it. Meantime some boys ran away, others cried all ni, in antici- pation of the morning’s ordeal. boy hung himself. The boy: ges the trustees to change the system. But the old obstinate at the head of affuirs had his own way, and every morning the poor little sightless creatures were tortured to carry outatheory. The superinterdent never took these baths, nor did the teachers, except on occasions. Finally the mother of a blind boy rebelled. She went to the papers and she went to the legislature, and she made it altogether too het tor the barbarians of the institution Now they graduate the water, but they duck the boys whether they will or no, isis philan- thropy of the compulsory sort.
