EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES.......Editer. Largest Circulation in the District Reading M Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY -Mareh 12, 1872. | New Hampshireand Connecticut are the only two states that hold spring elections this year. |e ‘New Hampshire leads off to-day and being a close state, and the contest coming off just at am ex- citing juncture Mm national politics when parties are martialling their forces for the presidential campaign, the result will be leoked for with in- terest. The present confusion and future un- certainty of political affairs heighten this in- terest, and add to the significance of the slightest expression of popular sentiment at the ballot box, becanse it may have an influence in shaping the course of parties for the great battle to come off in the fall. The granite state has never be- fore been the scene of a more active and vigor- ous canvass than that which closes to-day, and the issue between the two great parties turning pon purely national questions, the tariff, tax- ation and the policy of the present administra- tion generally, the result will be taken as con- demning or endorsing uch policy. The eanii- dates for governor are Ezekiel A. Straw, repnb- lican; James A. Weston, democrat; Lemuel P. Cooper, labor reformer; and James Blackman, probibitionist. Besides the governor, a rail- road commissioner, executive council, and new legislature are to be chosen. The majority for Grant in 1565 was 6, The republican major- ity for governor in 1570 was 1,453. Last year the vote was—Weston, democrat, 31,700; Pike, re. publican, 33,892; Cooper, labor reform, 782; Corn- temperance, 314; scattering, 41. Weston, it will be seen, had a majority over his republi- can competitor, but lacked a plurality of all the —_ east. His fees as a witness amounted to up- wards of thirty dollars, and as the memorialists bave bad a room full of witnesses dancing tendance day after day in the same way, it will be seen that at the rate of progress made, a | pretty big bill will be run ap by Crane & Co. | in witness fees aler As the government has | to foot the bill, the memorialists are not wor- | ried. By the time Crane (through his ocket- tullof blank hates by semmoning all his person to appear before him, the expenses of this ine vestigation will loom up somewhat formidably. | When the bill goes in to government for pay- ment, Congress will begin to realize what a boon we have in such disinterested reformers as Crane & & ‘o. Ina cable telegram 1 yesterday's Srar briet mention was made of the death at Pisa, Italy, of Joseph Mazzini, the widely known Italian | republican agitator. He was born in Genoa in + 1809. The French revolution of 1830 commended itself so much to him that he tried the same | game in bis native land, but was soon taken, with other young conspirators against the Italian government, and after a short imprison- ment banished. Marseilles became the head- | quarters of Italian exiles, and here Mazzini or- | ganized his famous «Young Italy” society for | the republicanism of the Peninsula. treason to | which by any member being punishable, with | death. Driven from France he sought refuge in | Switzerland, and forced to leave there went to | Lordon Until within a few years since he wax & recognized leading spirit in every revolution- ary cons racy andoutbreak which hadoccurred in Europe for nearly forty years; but lately writings have indicated that his views were get- ting to be more conservative. if it were rot enough that Washington is infested by the lneod of Cranes, Seversons, and Watsons, we ure now threatened with an invasion by the tree love gang of Stephen Pearl Andrews, of the ical and social household of Victoria Wood | Andrews, it will be seen by our local news, has filed.a certificate of incorporation with our recorder of deeds, sell the establishment of a ‘‘Pantarchal University” in the District of Co. ! Religion.” It is not strange that Andrews puts religion at the tail of bis kite. He proposes, it will be seen. to make Washington “the educational center” for his | xr: pantarchical doctrines, which is very kind of him. ‘There was a prospect yesterday of another arms investigation, as it was understood that parties were in the city trying to buy up all the "3 that the governmeni has on hand and all that can be made for some time to eome. There Was also a lively demand for gun boats, It was developed later in the day, however, that the demand was not for exportation, but that the operators were acting as agents for the proprie- tors of the Cincinnati Commercial and Enquirer, Tespectively, who soon expect to deelare war on the banks of the Ohio. Competition was said to be very brisk for a time between the rival agents, and prices ruled high, but as soon as the affair was divested of the qualities for an international complication the public interest in it died out. Nothing short of a foreign war makes much of a stir in Washington nowadays. ce. The Patriot ean furnish another valuable wit- ness to Crane. Yesterday that paper stated on “reliable authority” that in no single instance had the vaccination taken with the one hundred and fifty employes of the Government Printing Oice, vaccinated by the Board of Health. To- day it has to admit, on the authority of the fore- man of the printing office, that the result of the vaccination was satisfactory, and that not more than fifteen of the whole number vaccinated had called for a second vaccination. Try again. — +200. The Awerican interviewer followed the Grand Duke Alexis to Cuba, and asked him, among other things, if he had read the reports published about the Czar having ordered him (the Grand Duke) to return home during the Catacazy unpleasantness. Alexis at once an- swered: “Let us drop that; the story is too F-iculous for any sensible person to believe or to speak about, aud I think I'll light another cigar and see what my young friends over there are laughing about.” — Congressman Roceevelt has withdrawn from the editorial management of the New York Cit- acon. He found that ke woutd have to give up either the investigation of District affairs or his paper; and, finding that the former afforded more #”Sement than the latter, and at far less ‘WKPense, he conclude to let the Citizen slide. —a The Wisconsin ard Kentucky republican state conventions meet to-morrow, the former at Madison and the latter at Louisville, to select delegates to the national convention.
