The colored Waiter refusing to serve them, one of them applied to the proprietor to know why he could be served, and was toid that he could get anything he wanted, but could not be served at the tables, as they were all filled by his boarders. and the col- bese out o leave the premises. Cap- tain Stackpole has been suffering from disease of the liver tor some two months past, and his death was not unexpected by his physicians. He was about 43 years of , and a native of New Hampshire, He came to this city in 1855, with | President Pierce, and during his administration ‘was steward of the Executive Mansion. Shortly | after the clese of President Pierce's administra- tion he embarked in steamboating, and for a time bad an.interest in the Keyport, but for sev- | eral years he was a partner with Mr. James Sykes in the steamer Arrow, running to Mount Vernon, and eas her master. Although sutfer- ing for several.months past with a complication | of diseases, it was enly for the past three weeks that he was eonfined to his room. Zachariah Brewer, charged with makin, threats of personal violence against Mary E. Brewer, his wife. The Judge required $100 Donds to keep the peace: THE BOY SHOOTE: Thomas Triplett, charged with assault and battery on John B.’ Wilson with intent to_kili im. Wilson had met the boy Triplett on the street and accused him of robbing bis stable. ‘The boy ealied lim a d—d liar,andsome words followed, when the boy shot him with a revolver, the ball taking effect in his breast, since which Mr. W. has been confined to his house. Mr. Wilson appeared in court to-day and testitied against the boy to the effect as rated above. The Judge held Triplett in the sum of $500 for action of the grand jury. ‘MINOR CASES. Daniel Buchanan, drunk ‘and profane in Georgetown; fined $5. William Fairtax, assault and battery on Edward Devlin, a little boy, ty throwing a piece of coal, striking him over the eye and cutting his face. Fairfax said he was loading his cart with coal and the boy came in between him and the eart. Not much stock was taken in this story, and the Judge fined him 810 and costs. John T. Fenwick, charged with vio- tion of the license law; fined $10. ——————— EXPLosion OF A Sopa WATER Gas Gen- ERATOR.—About 2 o'clock to-day a gas genera- tor used in the manufacture of soda water exploded in the eellar under Clark’s drugstore, corner of Pennsylvania avenue and 4% street, cTeating considerable excitement in that neigh- borhood, the report being heard for some dis- tance. The vessel, which was of copper, was forced from the bottom of the cellar, where it had been standing, up through the floor, tearing the planks into atoms, and then struck the ceil- ing of the store, falling inside. The report was as loud as that of a sixepounder, and in a few minutes a large crowd had collected. Tne Boarp or Arrxats met at the office of Major H. A. The Hecord expresses the opinion that the population in remote districts of the United States is increasing among the more enltivated classes more slowly than it did one hundred years ago. and calls upon phystcians to employ a portion of their leisure in studymg the problems Involved in this whole question. It has been shown by Dr. Nathan Allen, of Lowell, who has carefully studied the statistics, that the average number of children in American fami- ites in New England is now but three, or three and a half, against a former average of eignt, and the conclusions drawn from this fact are irresistible. But the statisties are imperfect, chiefly through the neglect of medical practi- tioners, and the Record properly sustains the officers the Census and Education Bureaus in calling for a reform. THE Wasuxcton TREATY.—A London paper announces the receipt of the reply of the Secre- tary of State to Lord Granville’s note. It is said to rehearse the desire of this government for a final settlement of all the questions at issue upon amicable terms.
