The larger part of the audience, we are sorry to say, was made up o' was but one lady present, and rortunately for her she soon fell asleep, and her ears were not shocked by the indecent allusions of the lec- turer. Colonel Carmen, after quoting his hand- bill, went on to state that in May fast he had issued his poem (!) entitled “ The Law-making Adonis,” in which certain public characters “Black Mailing” — he extensively al- pored—or rather Mr. Lecturer sup; (the party) supposed himself to be the party Teterred to in that production—had caused to be publisbed in the Chicago Times a letter pur- Porting to give hts (the lecturer's) history, in Which he (Carmen) was charged with having Dlack-mailed certain Senators and other public men, and thus knew how it was him- selt. He remarked that four days after the publicat’on of this letter a large portion of Chicago was destroyed by fire, and that such a tissue of lies would canse the destruction of any city. Hardesty, of Marlborough—The Marl- borough Gazette ot yesterday says, in reference to the death of Jobn H. Hardesty, an account of which was given in Tue STAR a few days since. “Mr. Hardesty bad long been annoyed by a vicious dog, owned and kept by some one near his hotel. and threatened on several occasions to shoot the dog. After breakfast on Friday he took a walk on one of the lots belon, oi him to carry out his threat, and took with him a large navy revolver, thinking if thedog made his appearance he would put an end to him. While leaning over the fence which separates his property trom the lot adjoining where the dog was kept, it is thought that he must have bad the pistol in readiness to shoot. Edward McDamel alias Gaines and Kobert McDaniel, larceny of « bag of corn; fined $3. LIVELY TIME IN THE EDWARDS FAMILY. Mary wards and Samuel Simms, colored, | charged with an assault on Hezekiah Edwards, | were arraigned. Edwards testified that he and | his wife bad had a falling out abont a man named Robert Humphrey, and while hs was at werk she tried to take his household effects off, | end he found Simms helping her to move, and sme words pasted about dividing the things, when she struck at him with a brick, and Simms also threw bricks at him. On cross-examination he acknowledged that he had her down, ant | taking off the strap round bis waist, gave her three slaps, across the back of her dress only. | Hezekiah Edwards was then arraigned on the | charge of assault and battery on Mary Edwards. The testimony was that Mary gave him eau words, and Hezekiah pushed her out the ho’ into the gutter, and Simms interfered in belialf | of the woman, by throwing brickbats at Heze- kiah, when the latter beat Mary with the belt strap. Simms, who had been engaged to remove the goods, testified that Hezekiah was so rough with his wife that be went in to take her part, and Hezekiah flung six brickbats him, and he in turn gave him three paring stones in bis ribs During the scrimmage the panels were knocked out of the door, and other damage was done. ‘The judge said ‘there were so many assaults in the case that he felt some embarrassment in coming te a conclusion; but as it was a family quarrel, he thought it would serve the ends of justice the most by dismissing the case. She expostulated with him, and he ocked her down, nearly driving the breatlt from her body. He had paid only a small portion dow nu, and farming having been rather un rotltable the past year, he got discouraged. Five weeks ago he betook himselt to his bed, and has since refused to take food His wife has set before him all kinds of dishes, but during the past five weeks he has eat nothirg except an ounce of toast. He occa- sionally takes a piece of ice in his mouth. The family have frequently watched to see if he did not go into the pastey during the night, but thas far have not been able to catch him doing so; neither has anything been mised. Mr Grant Is now reduced to a skeleton. He says his desire is to die. He refuses to receive visits from either his neighbors or physicians. SAVAGE ASSAULT om a Cincinnati Ept vor.—In Cincinnati last evening John Perry, one of the editors of the Gazette, while walking down 4th street with his wife was assaulted with aclaub by dobm Walden, an Lrish laborer who first struck at Mrs. Perry, but missed her. fle then struck Perry. Perry grappled with Walden end both fell. Persons near by interfered, and the police arrested Walden, who is reported to bave made an assault on another man and his wife only afew weeks azo. He had no malice against Mr. and Mrs. Perry, and does not dis- close his motive. _ Came vor His Dinnxr.—A guest at a hotel in Belfast, Maine, on being told that dinner was ready, stripped off his coat, and, accompa. nied by his wife, entered the dining-room in his shirt sleeves.
