EVENING STAR. " nessY * WOVES......Waitor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | SHINGTON CITY: wsseeesFebraary 20, 1872. ‘The temperance revival, which is spreading throughout the country, has reached Philadel- | phia, and the total abstinence men are agitating for the enactment of the local option law, which | gives the majority in a ward the power to tay | whether liqnor shall be sold within ita limits or | not. Not only that, but the anti-alcoholists have commenced the enforcement of the Sunday liquer law, long regarded by the saloon keepers ‘as adead letter. The result is a lively contest betveen the cold water men and the disciples of Bacchus. A saloon keeper named Waldelich having been fined $50 last Saturday for a viola- tion of the Sunday law, there was asimaltaneous closing of every liquor saloon in the city next day—Sunday—greatly to the consternation and disgust of thirsty souls who had not laid in a | Sunday supply. This closing was not, it seems, the result of fearot the imposition of a $50 fine, Tecause establishments on Chestnut street, where the receipts in one hour aggregate more than that amount, were closed as tightly as the plebeian rum-holes. It was merely the first strategic move in the campaign of the whisky men. They gave the moderate drinkers who | will vote for a loeal option law a taste of what may be expected under itsoperations. Whisky, whisky everywhere, and not a drop to drink. Not even a sick man could obtain a drop of the Precious fluid. Now and then two or three thirsty souls would try the entrance to some place in the faint hope that the closing was‘‘only for effect,” but it was no go. But this voluntary action of the liquor dealears had an effect they did not countupon. Quietness and good order | prevailed throughout the day in localities where | rowdyism has hitherto been rampanton Sun- | days, and at night not a drunken man was to be seen on the streets. This has given great encour- agement to the temperance men, and many moderate drinkers will join them in enforcing | the closing hereafter in the hopes of still better | Lively Times on the Western Coast of | Mexico. REVOLUTIONS, AND HOW THEY ARE PAID FOR BY AMERICANS. Mr. A. H. S. Chronicle in reply to an editorial in the Toronto Glove ridiculing the story of the secret treaty, reasserts that it is anthentic, and says it is cred- ibly informed that it was signed aiter the con- clusion of the Washington negotiations by Lord De Gray for the British government, and Sir John A. MacDonald, as Premier of Canada, on the part of the Governor General. The chief points had been mutually agreed upon between the two governmentssome years Proviousiy, and and so far as Great Britain was concerned, it been definitely settled as the basis of the eee colonial policy. —The members of the ENCAMP- Sandtne LODGES of the adware ‘equested to assemble THIS EV; eeu ats orleck in mass meeting, “% the cam pmen| of the Seventh-street Hall, foextend & welcome to Brother E. ESPEY, Grand Patriarch. re OF 2290 FEBRUARY. | BY THE OLDEsT TERABITANTS’ ASSOCIA- results. | —-see-—__. ‘The woman movement seems to be taking a | Practical shape among sensible women on both | sides of the Atlantic. At an important meeting | of the National Union for the Education of | Women, lately held in Belfast, Ireland, over | which the Earl of Dufferin, an accomplished | member of the government, presided, it was pointed out that the immense preponderance in numbers of women over men, and the increas- ing reluctance or inability of men to marry, made it all the more necessary that the educa- | tion of women should be of a kind to enable them to help themselves. It was stated that | three millions of women on the British Islands were now earning their living. Several new ficlds for the employment of women are being opened in that country. Not long since one of the largest English insurance companies reor- ganized its clerieal force in order to give re- | spectable unmarried women and widows an opportunity to make a fair test of their ability to perferm the duties of clerks and aceountants- lady correspondent of the Hartford Post pro- poses to improve on the English idea with @ Proposition for the establishment of an insur- ance company, the stock of which she would have owned exclusively by women. At the present time many of the existing life compa- | nies decline to take “female risks,” and nearly all the accident companies refvse to insure women against anything short of death. The officers of the life companies are ungallant enough to declare that women cannot be in- | duced to tecord their exact ages, while the | “‘accident men” claim that it is next to impossi- ble to measure the extent of the damages done | tu the health of a woman through fright ocea- | sioned by false reports of accidents. This new company will have female directors, female clerks and female examiners. } | | I The pure milk movement is still it kept up in | o Boston, and has resulted in the formation ofa milk consumers association to buy directly from the dairymen. At the last meeting of the asso- ciation, Kev. E. E. Hale stated that the middle- men or contractors do what they please with the milk before it reaches the consumer; that they do please, in the first place, to take off all the cream; that they add water and a mixture of burnt sugar to give color, and then of salt and plain sugar to rectify flavor; that the popular taste has become so perverted that this vile mess is preferred to the genuine fluid; that this spurious milk causes a fearful mertality among children. On the other hand, Mr. Babcock, chemist to the health department, after a com- plete analysis of more than one hundred samples of so-called adulterated milk inthe last three years says that he has failed to findany adaltera- | tion whatever except water, caramel, sometimes a little salt, or perhaps bicarbonate of soda, to Prevent souring. The milk was diluted with water, colored with caramel or burnt sugar— perhaps a grain or two in a pint; this is not deleterious, any more than so much molasses. The reports of the department of internal health of New York city, he says, fully confirm his ‘state- ments. “She<ps’ brains, chalk, flour, starch, poisonous or deleterious substances, so often alluded to in sensation articles on adulteration, are not practically employed for, nor are they adapted y booms adulteration of milk.” | tend the The members of the Agsociation are invited to at- fi 8 a THURSDAY, 204 instawt, atl ovciock, rt Room m.,in A Paper a) peareen te the occasion ti be read bygone ot he mem - bers of ihe. otamit! public are respectfal By order of the Committee tee of Arran, tmnt {Patriot Republicunzt nts.
