EVENING STAR. Largest Circalation in the District | F:2.z't=- Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY 13, 1872. “Ler Tasm Preacn.”—There was a very large congregation at Rev. Dr. Cuyler’s church in Brooklyn last Sunday, many of those present attending im the expectation of hearing him make some mention in his discourse of the ac- tion of the Brooklyn Presbytery in cautioning him not again to allow Miss Smiley, of the So- ciety of Friends, to preach in his pulpit; but they were disappointed, as he did not refer to the woman question. It was the subjectof ser- mons im several other churches, however, but in none of them were the sentiments of Rev. Mr. Johnson of the Brooklyn Presbytery endorsed, who, in advocating a vote of censure on Rev. Dr. Cuyler, said that “he loved women, but none of them should ever dictate to him.” On the con- trary, most of them commended Dr. Cayler’s ac- tion. Mr. Beecher preached # stirring sermon in the evening trom the 34th and 35th verses of the fourteenth chapter of First Corinthians: “ Let your women keep silence in the churches,” Xc., and took the ground that St. Paul's obser- vation regarding the speaking of women in the churches was addressed to the Greek charches only, and was purely local and temporary, hay- ing nothing to de with the status of women in the present state of civilization. Had St. Paal known how stupid people would be in this day he would have added the words ‘‘in Greece” to his probibition to women to speak, Mr. Beecher honored his brother Cuyler, and gave arap at the inconsistent Presbyters who could quote St. Paul so glibly against women »peaking in church, but not against their braid- ing of bair and wearing of jewels and costly ap- parel. He did not believe in a woman’s right to preach if she had nothing to say, bat if she had be would bid ber God-speed. Rev. White, of the First Methodist Protestant Chureh, took the same ground; and so did the Rey. De } Witt Talmage, of the Brooklyn Tabernacle. He went even further than Brother Beecher and advocated women voting since “Eve voted in | Paradise to enslave the world in sin and Mary voted in the manger to emancipate the human race.” He asked, sarcastically, had Miss Smiley hoths or hoofs that his brethren were so afraid L society would tumble to pieces because she | preached in a church’ She did not preach treason; she simply told the story of the Cross. Her right to preach to ten or twenty-five was not questioned; why should her right to preach toa thousand s2ee- - Mr. Wells, of New York, proposes a ‘reformed system of taxation,” which so far meets with but little favor from the class he says he intends to benefit, namely, the owners and occupants of moderate-sized houses—worth from $3,000 to $19,000. He proposes to assess real estate for the poses of taxation at its full and fair market ie. ‘wners of houses of the moderate class have referred to, who now pay taxes on an average assessment of not over fifty doilars, see in this nothing more or less than a prospect of nearly double taxation; but by the other features of bis plan he contends that their present rates will be greatly reduced. He proposes, in the first place, to tax all personal property, con- sisting im stocks or shares in moneyed corpora- tions, at their fall value, by means of the contro! to which the government ig, entitled over this class of artiticial property-owners. In the next place, he proposes to assess the personal Property; other than shares in the moneyed cor- porations, by the evidence each person gives of the amo: he owns. This evidence is to be found in the rent or rental vaiue of the house, or warekouse, or other building occupied by him Mr. Wells contends that he can thus reach all personal property for taxation, which of itself is equal to a reduction of nearly one-half of the burden borne by real estate, and that this reduc- | tion will take place in spite of the advanced tion of real estate in the assessments. His tan, he claims, will equalize taxation. In the New York, while the actual values of the two kinds of property—real and porsonal— are nearly equal, real estate pays taxes in the | i babe ‘on of five toone; under the new plan it | pay but half. +see- not good for man to live alone. For one thing, he is not likely to live so long single as he would if married. So say the figures, and figures never lie. The Medical I’ress and Circular ays | M. Bertillon has made a communication on this teet to the Brussels Academy of M bas been published in the Reeue |. We have ait "pace for all his statistics | showing that the rule holds good mm France, in assels, in Belgium and in Holland; but con- | tent ourselves with stating that the result of all the calculations is that from 25 to 50 years of age the mortality per 1,000 is 4 im married men, 10.4 in bachelors, and 22 in widowers. This bene- ficial influence of marriage is manifested at a! ages. being always more strongly marked in men than in women. Whether similar caleula- tions in this country would give the same results is am open question. In countries where the vhicm women help by their industry and thrift to in. ; crease the family fund, instead of decreasing it by their love for display, married men are not subjected to the same strain as here, where, in order to make both ends meet, they are in many Cases engaged in @ hopeless and never-ending struggle, not favorable to longevity. —— Referring | to the fact that three fatal railway accidents have occurred this winter from broken rails, and that in two of the instances additional lives were lest on account of the cars being set on fire by the red hot stoves on board, theGolden Aye says «In spite of the frequent accidents from car- rying red hot stoves, and the constant warnin, which come from the fearful losses of life {1 consequence of this road companies persist in heating their cars in this dangerous and criminal way. And prob- ably y will continue te doso until a presi- | dent, or a director or two, burned into a erp, or our legislatures tal e the matter in hand and com pel these corporations to have a decent regard for the lives of the unfortunate people who have to ride over their roads.”” The only hope for the public lies in the roast- ing of high railway officers. Se long as mem- | bers of legislative bodies are furnished with free passes over railway cost the companies anything; and so long as leguslators can be bought so cheap, free passes | will be given. The thing works on the endless chain principle. 1 ‘The musical “crieket” of a western paper says of Nilsson’s appearance in “Lucia” that she was “too robust to correctly personate the gen- tle Lucy Ashton.” “ It was well done,” he adds, plaintively—‘yea, it was nobly done—but her physic was against bh Well, she shouldn't take j hysic when abont to personate the gentle Luey.
