«ROSRY & NOY Largest Circalation in the District 3" Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDAY........Febraary 7, 1972. ‘The snow blockade on the Union Pacitic rail- Toed If continued much longer will seriously * the future prospects of that great work. engers and freight for the cast and west are ielayed, that some of the passengers en route save been reduced to a diet of crackers and fish, thers have found it hard to obtain foodof The Japanese Embassy were fortn- nate in tying up at such a well-stocked settle- ment Salt Lake City, and will bave a good opportunity ot studying one of our peculiar in- ricisure, without any dangerof starving to death. One of the minor effects of the blockade is to change the plansof M. Octave Pavy, the wealthy and adventurous young Frenchman who i* going to seek the north pole on arubber raft. This raft is composed of four Keel-shaped cylinders, fastened on the » slats, to which the necessary masts and rigging are attached. It is so smali that it occupies very little room—in fact, M. Pavy carries his pack in a barrel it it will carry about ten thousand pounds of freight, be- sides the cre M. Pavy is in St. Louis, en route for the Pacific coast; but finding the Union Pa- citic road blocked with snow, will return to New Orleans, and go to San Francisco by some other route. He will leave San Francisco in thespring, and will steer for Petrozavodsk, where he will take em beard provisions, furs, dogs, and rein- deers. Sailing through Bebring’s Straits, M. Pavy will bear for the land discowered by Capt. Long, about 500 miles broad, which he will cross in sledges drawn by reindeer and dogs, taking his boat with him. This land lies between 71 and 80 degrees of latitude, and will be reached, it isexpected, sometime in August. After cross- ing it, he expects to find the open Polar Sea de- seribed by navigators, on which he will embark and sail around to Greenland or Spitabergen—if be can. stitutio ———_-«ee- The great problem in New York just now seems to be how to make both ends meet in the | matter of living. The papers are all devoting Jong leaders to thesubject, while whole columns are surrendered to correspondents, who are try- ing to point out some remedy through a recital of experiences, complaints and suggestions. Some of these are quite sensible, and all show the great difficulty of living in New York or any where in the vicinity on a moderate income. It is a noticeable fact, however, that nearly every writer manages to lug in such stuff as “social Position,” “cireumstances in life,” “becoming style,” or an equivalent, and each points out with great distinctness the perplexitiec attend- ing his or her particular case. Now, just here lies the root of the whole trouble. It means that reople are living according to somebody else’s ideas, and not according to their own means, whatever they may be. condition of things continues, writing to the newspapers on the subject will be profitless bus- ness. Whenever people exercise commonsens> enough to make their position conform te their reans, and regulate their expenditures by their ‘ual jincome, after it is in hand, instead ot undertaking to make a small revenue keep up an ostentatious style, and spending their money before they get it, as they new do, there will be hope of reform, and not before. Nothing short of downright old-fashioned econ- omy and steady retrenchment, independent of what other folks think, will accomplish any- thing. +<0e- Delegate Hooper, of Utah, is working zeal- ously here, both’ with the ‘Admiuistration and Congress, to make a compromise with the Mor- mons possible. The conduct of some of the Mormon zealots in the territorial legislature has embarrased him somewhat, but there will bs little diftic aly im sdmitting ¢ Congress can be satistied that pol jeamy w will be extinguished. If this is not m: tain, all hopes of a compromise are at an ond. The President doos not intend to back out of his de- termination to extirpate polygamy. He prefers that the Mormons should do it volantarily, but, it they refuse to do it, he will insist upon the observa - Cor. Springkeld Republican. And this is what the President should do. The Mormon leaders are just now in the mood to | swap off poly gaiay for the right of citizenship in | astate of the Union. There cannot be a better time to bring the Mormon question to aselution. = SASS Sasa aia Those who wish to do good to their fellow man, but whose means are limited, should not be discouraged after the example set them by Mary A. Goodman, a colored woman of New | Haven, who died recently, leaving her whole property, some $5,000, to the theological school im that city for the aid of young colored men stadying for the ministry. This sum is the savings of a life spent in such toil as washing and domestic service. She felt that the time was coming, in the rapid progress of har race and peop when they would require a more highly educated ministry, and she consecrated to this object the entire earnings of her life. ——-<e- _—_ It will be observed that the Queen’s speech delivered yesterday does not justify such splarg- ing im regard to the Washington treaty as was indulg ago. Had a demonstration like that been made by the journals on this side, under the same cir- cumstances, it would have been safe to assume that a little venture in stoek-jobbing was at the bottom of it; but of course it would be unchar- itable to attribute such a motive to our Eng- lish cousins. They are too straightforward and steady-going fellows for anything of that sort Certainly they are. “Blawsted Yankee trick’ ye kau . Charles Reade, who is never happy unless he is able to get himself into the newspapers, has lately written a letter charging “ George Eliot” with “ borrowing” his ideas! It must be that Mr. Reade is about getting ont another novel, and that this is a shrewd trick to get it adver- ‘ised gratuitously. There is far more likelihood ot his borrowing from than lending to the author » question—a likelihood based both on her er literary character and intellect, and his “nfortunate habit in that respect. It is very well understood that Mr. Reade is an adapter rather than a creator, while no such charge has er been made against the author of “Adam lle,” ete. Kev. Mr. Kittredge of the of the Third Presbyterian the «burch of Chicago, recen: OD reading verse beginning, “And nie worthless ke me,” stated that he a , com: would not ask his con- regation to sing such a line. It was toolish to toy moreno tuck ing Stee ee omitted —Exchange. ~~ page yi ea Very good for Dr. Kittredge.
