WASHINGTON SATURDAY | The Telegraph Controversy. | A recent editorial in Taz Sran in regard to stion to whom is due the credit of giving | forth s*veral communications, some of which have appeared in TH STAR, and we are alsoin | &F receipt of a mass of documentary evidence in the matter. The facts developed by an examination of | this testimony are to the following effect: Some discoveries rendering the electro-magnetic tele- graph possible were made by Oersted of Copan- hagen, in the year 1819; others were made by Arago and Davy and Ampere in 1820, and by Sturgeon in 1525, but none of them reached the peint ot discovering a means of making the wire piactical rviceable over any considerable distance. The difficulty was deemed insuper- able, and Mr. Barlow, of the Royal Military | my, of Woolwich, England, in his in- | gations published in 1825, declared ade | ¥ upon the possibility of a telegraph. hing feasible in the way of discovery was made for two or three years after, though it seems to be established that Harrison Gray Dyar, an can, put a short working line of telegraph on on Long Island in 1827 or 1828. He used common electricity, and not electro-mag- netism, and but one wire, which operated with @ spark that left red marks upon paper chemically prepared. Byar asserts that Morse, who was not a man of anyscientitic attainments, got his ideas of operating a wire telegraph from his (Merse’s) brother-in-law, the latter having derived them from him while acting as his counsel years before. However, this question | affects the validity of Morse’s claim to the | svention of the mode of working the telegraph. | ‘The great difficulty in the way of operating the | Wire at any distance had not been met until Prof. Henry, in 1s28, made discovery of the fact that a galvanic current could be transmitted | toa great distance with so small a diminution of | force as to produce mechanical effects adequate | to the desired object, by means of a galvanic i tensity battery. The people in that sec- tion look coldly upon the female progression- ists, and do not seem disposed to give them the slightest encouragement. In Kichmond, how- ever, the advocates of woman suffrage have ef- fected something like a lodgment, and oecasion- ally hold public meetings, which are well at- tended. (in Wednesday last, Mrs. Anna White- head Bodeker, of Richmond, boldly bearded the house of delegates with a lengthy petition, in which she claims the right of suffrage under the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments te the constitution of the United States, and sets forth that she has hitherto been denied her rights in j this respect. She therefore prays the general | assembly “to pass such laws as may, in the wis- dom of the general assembly, be deemed sut- ficient and necessary for enforcing the right of uftrage without regard to sex.” She further | asks that the general assembly permit her, either In person or by proxy, to address them upon the subject of suffrage.
