This proposed temporary | te resolution in the Senate declaring expedient to accommodate the ever-increasing travel between up-town and down-town does not receive much favor in the newspapers, which think that until permanent relief is afforded by an nnderground or overhead railroad, a reform of the bacly-managed street cars might do some- | thing to relieve the pressure. The votes indicate a purpose to make | the fire limits somewhat narrower than the city | limits. The serious objection to this is that it | surrounds the business part of the city with a cordon of bighly inflammable wooden buildings, which will have a disastrous effect in adding to the cost of insurance, increasing the rates of in- terest and discouraging investments in the city- To be sure it is provided that whenever the ownersof a majority of the ground on any square ide the fire limits sha’! sorequest, that square | shall be under the operation of the fire ordinance, but that will do but little towards remedying the evil. The Chicago Tribune thinks that it would | be much better to adopt a law similar to that in this city, making it unlawful toerect any wooden structure within a prescribed distance—that journal puts it 150 feet—in any direction from a brick or stone building already erected. ‘The wickedness of lynch law is clearly demon- trated in Indiana, where it has been shown beyend a doubt that the three colored men who were hanged by a mob for the murder of the Park family were innocent of that crime. It | was so stated before by the Indianapolis Journal, and denied by the friends of the lynchers; but the evidence against the murderer isnow said to be conclusive. Worse than all, he was one of the most prominent of the lynchers, particularly active in having the colored men hanged. In- diana should be prompt in dealing out severe pment to all who Lad a part in this terrible | nd the case should be a warning to all who are disposed to take the law into their own bands. ee = The monthly report, No.3, of the bureau of statisties for 1571-72, now in press, gives in de- | tail the immigration into the United States for } the quarter ended September 30, 1571, in seven @itterent statements, showing sex, age, nation- ality, occupation, & From these tables it appears that the total number of passengers arrived during the quarter was 73,465 were males and total number arrived, 19,135 were citizens of the United States returning from abroad, and 7,904 were foreigners not intending to remain in the Vnited States, leaving the number of actual | smanigrants 98.400, of whom 5(,827 were males Mr. Callicot, the editor of the Albany Times was made happy a few evenings ago by being ie the recipient of a handsome service of tT plate, presented to him by the leading 4 tisens of the place, “‘as a mark of the esteem | in which he is held by the people of Albany.” | The compliment was as well deserved as it was | U gracefully tendered, tor Albany has no more | atJ« clock. earnest and efficient worker tor her prosperity | and advancement tham Mr. Calcot.
