It is a little curious that in the modern rage for exploration Into the unknown parts of the world, so little has been learned concerning that land of amazons and men of incredible stature and large feet—Patagonia. At last, however, a traveler has penetrated the land of romance— one Captain G. C. Musters, of the Royal navy — who has written a book concerning the uatrod. den groand between the straits of Magellan and the Rio Negro. He contirms what has been January 16, 1872. stated so uniformly concerning the extraordin- | ary stature of the Patagonians, and also states, contrary to the received opinion that they de- velop their legs at the expense of their arms, that the muscular development of the arms and chests is in all particularly striking, and as a rule they are well proportioned throughout. ‘They are, however, great walkers, and their powers of abstaining from food while traveling is wonderful, as it isnot unusual for them to go two and even three days without a mouthful of anything but wild fruit. They are polygamists, but do not generally go beyond two wives. In religion they salute the new moon with respect- ful words, and believe in a great and good spirit, who, according to tradition, created the Indians and animals, and dispersed them from “ God’s-hill;” but they have no idols or objects of worship. They have, however, wizard-doc- tors, whose business it is to propitiate or drive away the principal evil spirit known as the Gualichu. The Patagonians, or ““Tehuelches do not now exceed 1,500 men, women and chil dren, and are rapidly decreasing through the | ravages of disease and of liquor, which the tra- ders bring into the settlements. ——_-s0e- ‘The friends of “ home rule” for Ireland have “ carried the war into Africa.” That is, they have very sensibly transferred the agitation for home rule from the green isle to England, and are holding meetings there to complain of and demand redress for the wrongs committed ainst Erin. The advantages of this course of action are two-fold. In the first place, no Irish- man needs to be told of the wrongs of his native land. It is the first lesson he learns. Englisb- men, be wever, can be told something many of them do not know of the harsh laws which op- press Irishmen, and the knowledge of it will not increase their reverence for the government which, indirectly at least, produces misery and social trouble. and famine and crime in Ireland. In the next place, there is more freedom of speech on Engtish soil than is allowed the Irish- man athome. At the public meeting of Irish- men recently held in Liverpool in favor of « home rule,” sentiments were expressed which im Ireland would have led to the arrest of the speakers and the dispersion of the assemblage which applauded them by the police. The most Practical relief which has come to Ireland, how- ever, for many years is the recent division of the estates of the Marquis of Waterford, small por- tions of which were sold at auction—trom thirty to fifty years’ purehase. This is sensible, and if followed out in both England and Ireland would do much for the amelioration of the condition of the farming classes, for their poverty and nearly all their troubles are due partly to the character of the land tenures and partly to grasping landlords. Give the men who till the soil an interest in it and the good results will soon be seen. «woe — The New York Commercial brands as an arrant imposition the ‘‘one term dodge” of the enemies of the President. The discussion has crept into the Senate, but the same objections to tne re-elec- tion ofa President may be urged to the re-elec- tion of a member of Congress. The first term of a Kepresentative in the House of Representa- tives and the first term of a Senator are largely employed to secure his re-election. Why should they not be restricted toa single term as well as the President? ‘The principal argument for restricting the President to one term is that in his first term he exerts himself to secure his re-election by the corrupt use of patronage. But may he not use and do not his true interests dictate the proper use of, his patronage by the appointment of the best men for that purpose? Is not his eligibility second election the strongest possible in- dacement to good behavio to have the respectable wing of the woman's rights party, violently opposed to Wooudbullism, and it is, therefore, with some surprise that we find in the papers of that city a report of a recent discussion in “ Boffin’s Bower, women, on the subject of “free love.” No matter how strong the opposition against that doctrine was among the debators, the fact itselt that there was a discussion among @ mixed audience of young men and women, married and unmarried, on the claim of Mrs. Victoria Woodhull to change her love every day is of itselfa sign of demoralization. Femaie modesty will not long survive such ordeals. Miss Jennie Collins, the presiding virgin of the Bower, thought that “in time the world might be good enough for free love,” but, in the present state of society, it would destroy all sanctity of the marriage relation. +20e- It is worth something to a hotel to have Fisk killed im it. Aside from the advertisement given to the establishment by the murder, the proprietor now brings in a bill of $2,500 for the use of the reom in which the deceased breathed his last. In view of this claim, it strikes us that the friends of Mr. Fisk were lucky it they were able to get away with his clothing and personal | bas grown into an immense | sufficient suppl & reading room for young working- | | insti effects. But we presume his clothes wouldn't | fit the landlord. — see . Eliza Logan, well remembered by the theater zoers of a dozen years ago, died suddenly at the St. Cloud Hotel in New York yesterday morn- ng, Of congestion of the heart. She was mar- ‘d to George Wood, the proprietor of Wood's tseum, and of late years had nut appeared on the stage, although upon it she won a wide ‘ putation and held an honorable place. ee Both houses of the Maryland legislature yes- 1 rday adopted a proposition for the appointment +! & committee to divide the state into six con- ressional districts in accordance with the #pportionment under the census of 1870. ———-. eer A Comrromise Tar Lovistana Dirri- <CLT¥.—The situation of poiitical affairs = ‘ew Orleans assumed a new phase yesterday b: the repeal of the obnoxious laws wiileh the hed terites are opposed to. Sir John Duke Coleridge opened for the defence. He said the testimony they proposed to otter woald show that the claimant was a conspirator, per- jurer, forger—in tact, a common impostor and villain—and that Baigert and Carter, his accom- plices, were unscrupulous rogues and concoctors of this stupendous im; ure. The speech of the distinguished counsel was received by the crowded court room with applause, whieh was ately suppressed. The counsel read a number of letters, showing that the real Sir Roger Tichborne was a refined gentleman— point of fact, the very opposite of the claiman’ and announced that he would call, among the witnesses for the defence, a tatooed nobleman, who had tatooed the genuine Sir Roger; and would also produce npon the stand the cousin of Sir Roger, M'me Radcliffe, who would swear io the fact that the claimant told a falsehood in asserting that he had ever had illicit intercourse with her, Ressta Gettixe Reavy vor War.—Ac- cording tothe St. Petersburg correspondent of the London Engineer, there is great act! the Russian foundries and government arsenals, the government cannon foundries have been greatly enlarged, and the entire infantry arma- ment has been changed from muzzle-loaders to breech-loaders.
