CROSBY 8. NOYES..,....Editor. Largest Circalation in the Districs , Reading Matter on Every Page. | : ’ WASHINGTON CITY: ‘TWURSDAY..........Jamuary 1, 1873. The Financial Standing ef the Dis- trict. Oar cable dispatches on Tuesday brought the infermation that the four million lean of this District had been negotiated in the European markets at the unexpectedly tavorable figure of © 4—equal, estimating the difference in ex- change,to 96. The following dispatch to Gor- ernor Cooke indicates the manner in which this success is regarded in financial circles in New York—a city, by the way, that, with all its wealth, has been unable to borrow money in the same European financial centers that hare taken the District loan on these favorable tmes:— he socceme the District loan in London The books were opened yesterday and viv close to-morrow ni , although more th he subscribed. onderful success. and the District credit considered It wast be a great gratification f0 you coant it must be a jeat a cant to see this result established. = The result of this negotiation bears testimony, both to the high standing of Governor Cooke at home and abroad, and to the belief among thé shrewd business men of the old world that Wash- ington is to be, under the new order of things, a city of the first rank, vieing with Earopean capitals in attractiveness, and having a soltd base of prosperity 10 enable it'to pay the indebt- edness incurred in makingit such a city. | ‘The zeal of Mr. Henry Bergh, , president of the New York society for the prevention of eryelty to animals, keeps him continually in hot water; but be philosophically pursues the even tenor of his way, regardless alike of abuse and ridiewle. His late crusade against the pigeon shooters has caused that class of so-called sport ing men to make game of the unfeathered friend of the birds, and in this the shooters are joined by Mayor Oakey Hall. One would think that official had enough to do at present to maintain adofensive position successfully against the re- formers without provoking any new contest, but for some reason of othef he goes for Bergh savage- ly. One of his last official acts before he retired (temporarily?) to the shades of private life was to attend a meeting of the police board on Tuesday and offer a resolution, which was adopted, for | obtaining « legal opinion as to whether or not pigeon matehes contravene any statute. He then made a speech, in which he assumed that | there was no legal offence in the matter of | pigeon matches, and stated that he believed | “that Mr. Bergh, whose name was Burk before he traveled in Russia,” no doubt got the law in Kussia where he got new name. oe. Hon. George H. Pendleton is the latest dis tinguished democratic convert to the “ passive” or “possum” policy. A committee of demo- crais of Wooster, Ohio, having invited him te attem@-their celebration of the battle of New Orleans, he sent them ‘a letter in reply, in which, after the customary talk about the cor- ‘ion of the administration and its centralized military character, he gave the following disin- terested advice to sore-headed republicans: “if — be, as is a many gg of the republican party who disapprove the ideas ch dominate ihe adurinistravion of President Grant, and are prepared to oppose his Te- election, they should declare theft purposes, their fg pings and manifest their strength, and if 1 may predict the future, they | vill have no ‘jet ~~ > even the most sensitive and timid a operate with the The New York legislature is considering a Proposition to pay the members $8 per day. ‘Their present compensation, #3 per day, cannot be gaade to cover the ordinary expenses of living at Albany, to say nothing ef extraordinary ones; aad it is thought that if members receive enough from the state to pay their board and washing bills they will not be so easily tempted to dis- honest efforts te" improve their fortunes. This look» logical; but the trouble is that $8 would be jest as far practically from meeting the ex- ™ nses of the fast men, whe would be likeliest to eir votes, as $3. No man should be asked to work for the public, however, for less than a ‘a'r compensation; and it would be a very peor’ | legislater whe wouldn't be worth more than $3 | per day. VioLations or Tue Hack Law.—Why is it | that the main provisions of Mr. Solomons’ hack law, those that are to enlighten the public of its ements, are not complieil with” A printed seale of the fares is required to be bung up in ench vehicle, and a copy of the same, together with the licensed number of the driver, is to be banded to the passenger upon entering, neither ot which is done. Why do not the Register and the police “Inspector ot Hackney Carriages and | Cabs” attend to this?» Laws are of no use with- | out they are enforced. —— ‘Tas MaryLanp SenxatTorsur —The east- | ern shore members of the Maryland legislatare | [ had a caucus at Apnapolis Tuesday night, called | for the purpose of uniting upon a candidate for United States Senator to succeed Senator Vick- bose term expires March 3d, 1873. As most every county had a candidate to present, and some of them two, the caucus eannct be considered a success. No vote was taken, and the only result arrived at was the passage of a resolution to support no candidate not a resident of the eastern shore counties. ——_ + #02. Jf any one had srophested a@ year ago that by the toth of January, 1872, Tammany would be overthrown in New York and the city gorern- | ment in the hands of the republicans, he would | have been set down as a lunatic, and yet, with ya Gen. Jobn Cochrane as acting mayor, and the new board of aldermen and other reform offi- cers in charge of affairs, the revolution may be set down as pretty nearly completed. ce - er: The New York Pest—a paper not given to over laudation of President Grant—suys that there is not a word of evidence which tends to implicate the President in any of the scandalops transactions with which he has been charged By Partisan opponents ia connection with the New York Custom House. The Post thinks that jougnals which have assailed his persoual integ- rity would act wisely to retract at once. ——— see. — ‘The pernicious practice of carry ying concealed deadly weapons, which has led to so many cow- ardly murders all over the country recently, is beigg deservedly condemned by the press in every section. The only way to break ft up is 4 to make imprisonment the punishment instead of fine. —— ‘The National Republican Committee, it will be seen, have decided to hold the national nomi- nating convention in Rhiladelphia. This result is undoubtedly mainly due to the indefatigable petmonal efforts of €ol. L Forney to thatend. ‘The residence of the late John C. Calhoun in Sovth Carolina has not been purchased ve colored man, as published in nearty all the papere throughout the country, but by Golone Clemon, }, the son-in-law of Mr. Calhoun. The dif- ficulty has arisen in consequence of a dispute in reference to the apportionment of the hours of labor. A few weeks previously the directors of | the establishment had consented to a reduction of the weekly time, aud d that the men should wark from six to oe three-quarters of an hour for breakfast and one hour for din- ner. On every Saturday work was to be stopped at noon. This proposition was not acceptable to the men, who preterred to work from six to tive with their usual meal times, and to leave off at 1o’clock on Saturday. These terms were not granted, and the men therefore struck. INAUGURATION OF THE Governor or Marr- Lasp.—Hon.W m.
