_EVENING STAR. CONGRESSIONAL. omciasion Yesterday's Proceedings. SENATE.—After our report closed— The resolution admitting to his seat in the . Senate, Mr. Goldthwaite, of Al , was ted. ‘Tbe resolution to pay Foster Blodgett, of Geor- gia, late contestant for a seat in the Senate, the « 2 perdicm usual in such cases, was Mr. Scott called up the resolutions, reported from the Kuklux —": to = into —< tody the recusant wit lam wLscismera ieniccle Getepesiee Messrs. USE.—Alter our report closed, Mr. Kellys to revise the laws relative to the mint, assay and cor of the United States being ler const by the House in Committee he Whole— Maynard briefly advocated his proposed iment to strike out that portien of the hrst section providing that the director of the mint shall bold bis effice for the term of five jears, unless sooner removed by the President, pow reasons to be communicated to the Senate. Mr. Holman (Ind.) moved to amend the amendment by striking out the words “‘anless sooner removed SE oe upon reasons to be communicated to the Senate.” Mr. Hol amendm-nt was rejected—ayes «198. Mr. Wiiliard (Vt.) moved to amend Mr. Ma nard’s amendment by inserting “and shall hold Lis office during good | behavior.” Rejected. ‘The original amendment was then rejected. Mr. Garfield (Ohio) moved to strike out the twelfth section the salaries of mint and as- say officers. He he made the motion to strike out beeause he bad not time to pre the amendment which he desired to submit. On motion of Mr. Dawes, the House, at 3:45 p. | ~ %., adjourned. pene Ree The Baltimore Poisoning Case. Alter our telegraphic report of the Whar- ton trial closed yesterday: Prof. White was examined for some time in regard to the color and other tests relied on bj Aiken and Tonry, the accuracy of ‘Aiken's mode of computing the quantity of tartar emetic found by his analysis, and of Topry’s caleula- tions by weight. The course pursued in the examination was similar to that in the examin- ation of Profs. McCulloch, Genth, and Reete, yrevious!y examined as chemical experts, and his anewers were merely cumalations in regard to the insufficiency of tests and the entire inaccuracy of the mode of ascertaining the quantity of tartar emetic reported obtained by them. “fhe witness confirmed the statements of Hevious experts thet organic and other sub- stances would produce the precipitate obtained Aiken when no antimony was present, and that the only conclusive test was the production of the metal. The cross-examination of Prof. W. was proceeding at 3o’clock, when the court adjourned. A Wire's Devorio: Mr. Jacob Staley some time ago thought to steal a letter in maha from the United States mail. The letter contained a draft, on which the cash was got by a forged indorsement. A touching feature of the case consisted in the fact that Staley’s wife went upon the stand and swore that she was the torger. Her hope was to save her husband, and she apparently perjured herself to compass that end. The effort was vain. and the judge, in passing sentence, said he was entirely ed that the woman was not guilty of the crime with which she charged herself. The sentence was a heavy one, being that Staley should be confined in the house of correction for ten years. Accorpine to the Atlanta New Era the namss of « number of the original “* fire-eater”’ uncon- ditional Georgia secessionists—* Blue Cockade Vigilance Committeemen”—appear on the list cf rejeeted applicants for property destroyed by the rebel government during the war. Some portion of the milk remains in the pores of the gum, which it is almost impossible to remove, and which spoils the fresh milk with which it comes in contact. ‘The white zinc or white lead which is often used in vulcanizing is also very poisonous. e7-Susan B.
