EVENING STAR. “CROSBY 8. NOYES.......naltor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY...........November 20, 1871. ‘The uses of legal injunctions are manifold— we have had some experience of them in this city—but who would have supposed that one could be framed to accomplish such a seeming impossibility as the sealing of a woman's mouth When she wanted totaik. Yet it appears this has been done. In spite of the ancient saying, that there is no power on earth to stop a woman’s tongue, Judge Pratt, of Brooklyn, N. Y., tied Up one so effectually that it could not wag until another learned Judge had dissolved the legal spell. The connection of Mrs. Josephine Mans- field—wife, or ex-wife, of Frank Lawlor, the actor—with the scandalous Fisk-Stokes case in New York is doubtless familiar to our readers: ‘The case came up last Friday in that city, in the Supreme Court Chambers, before Judge Brady ©n a motion to show cause why the stay of pro™ ceedings granted by Judge Pratt, of Brooklyn’ on the order changing the renue to the Supreme Court, should not beset aside. After argument, the further hearing was postponed; but Judge Brady said the stay would be so far vacated as to enable counsel to proceed with the main mo- tion. The subsequent proceedings are thus re- ported: “Mr. Courtney —Will modiry it enou; to permit my client to tatk tome? “Her mou ——— been sealed ght by this injunction. ndge Brady——Is your client a woman ? Mr. Courtney.—Yes, = Mrs. Mansfield, a me woman, ery handsome —— an: ction eed aey pom aang my mention — that ez necessil rei. If Judge Pratt can stop a woman from speak- ing to her counsel, he can certainly prevent her from scolding her husband. Talk of reform, what a revolution this is! What henpecked hus- band will be without an injunction? Imagine the sweet satisfaction with which Mr. Caudle would have drawn the potent parchment from under his drowsy pillow if injunctions had been invented in his day. With what security he would have returned from “ the lodge,” even at 3 o'clock a. m., and slept the sleep of innocence until Mrs. Caudle found her Judge Brady to break the spell. see. ——__ Rey. Dr. Ewer, whosome time ago pronounced *Protestanism a failure,” has just been con- Strained to resign the rectorship of Christ Church, New York. It seems that the latest complaint against him is the admission of eight ladies to the confessional. A vestryman, who discovered that his wife was in the habit of con- Siding to Dr. Ewer a knowledge of her sins, be- came so indignant that he first made an affidavit | about it and then rushed into the newspapers with his grievances. The disgusted vestryman | also alleges that his wife is a pretty woman, and it would seem that he considers that this tact ag- gravates the crime of the doctor. Probably he holds that a pretty woman should confess only to her husb: We understand that a change has been made | in the management of The Patriot, the demo- cratic organ of this city. Col. J.G. Berret with- draws from active connection with the paper,— the general management of which will hereafter | de in the hands of a board of trustees, consisting | of Messrs. J.C. McGuire, R.T. Merrick and | W.H. Philip. So far as we learn, there has been no change in the editorial staff; but as it is understood that many of the stockholders were dissatisfied with the moderate course of | the paper lately, it is likely that it will here. after pursue a more aggressive course toward Loth the general and local administrations. The Spanish radicals hay have succeede succeeded in de- feating the government in the Cortes, and politi- cal affairs have once more assumed a serious look. The compromise ministry recently formed has resigned, after a brief tenure of office, and further troubles are in prospect. ss S7 Tweed retires from the Metropolitan Hotei in New York December Ist.
