Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, Tax Pror.sep Laroz Rerorm Convan- Trow.—The organizing committee of the national labor reform party movement, who propose to hold a national convention in this city gn the5th proximo, have received letters of sympathy and encouragement from Senator Spencer and Hon. 8. F. Cary. Senator Wilson writes that while he | is a friend of labor and will do anything in his | Power to elevate it, he cannot, with propriety, join the Isbor reform party. Whatever he does in behalf of labor he prefers to do with the re- | publican party. WASHINGTON CITY: SATURDAY.........November 1s, 1871. A Model Paper. point to this issue of Tur Evening sras | «cimen of a paper of which not its pub- ustly feel proud. Its thirty compact col- * of reading mattcr ecntain more than an ordinsry volume which sells for a dollar-and-a- half, and are a complete reftex not only of the new>, bat also of the literature of the day, while its unequaled array of closely classified, erisp, fresh advertisements furnish nearly everything in relation to business matters which the reader ® ll Le able to learn from all the other papers of the city combined. As we have stated before, the double sheet istues of Tue Stan are published at great extra expense to ourselves, and for the sole benefit of its readers. The cost is a pretty heavy item, Dut the credit of furnishing more reading matter Sor three cents than any newspaper in the world is worth a good deal, and with that and the incidental reward which such enterprise always brings we are satisfied. “The Tortures of the Dinner-Tabi Scribner's Monthly has made a good many hits, but never a greater one than the mauling it gives that abominable nuisance, the custom of sgeech-making at the dinner-table. Who that has “been there” fails to recognize in Dr. Hol- land's description the horrors of that task, the anticipation of which is torture, and the per- formance of which is usually a failure? There is something, he argues, very absurd in the sub- mission of so many men to this custom. There is never & public dinner, or a dinner which may possibly merge into formality of toast and talk, without its overhanging dread. There is prob- ably not one man present, from him who ex- pects to be called upon for a speech to him who is afraid that the demand will at last reach Lim, whe would not pay a handsome price to be out of the room and its dangers. To multitudes of men the viands of a feast are gall aud bitterness, through this haunt- ing dread of the moment when, with bellies full and brains empty, they shall tind them- selves on their feet, making a frantic endeavor t say something that shall bring down the fork-bandles and give them leave to subside. ‘The drinking which is resorted to for loosening the tongue or putting the company into that sensitively appreciative mood which responds te buncembe and bathos, is often shameful and ys demoralizing. Not a good thing comes of it all, nobody enjoys it, speakers and hearers dislike it, and still the custom is continued. This is all very true, and just, as every one must concede, but Scribner, in its noble rage against the detestable custom, seems to infuse semething of the gall and bitterness tt describe as visited upon the victim of the dinner-table, inte its awertion ‘that as a rule the successful inner-table orator is a shallow man—one whose thoughts areon the surface, whose vocabulary is small and at quick command, and whose lack of any earnest purpose in life leaves him free to talk upon trifes”’ Unfortunately, there are so many notable exceptions to this rule that the shallew fellows have too much countenance to feel properly abashed by thisdictum. Among the felicitous speakers of the dinner table of the calls to mind the names of jay, Sargent S. Prentiss, Rufus Choate, past Henry James I present, om Orr, Reverdy Johnson, Caleb Cush- ing, Perley Poore, Schuyler Colfax, James G. ‘aine. James Brooks, and this is but the begin- ping Of the list. Charles Summer at the Forney dunner by his exceedingly happy response to various kindly references to his course, ‘poked’ ath rished those who had got the notion that he say nothing off-hand. Charl table as while Thacker: alone but the city in which its published | from different parts of the table, rather Dickens wasinimitable at the dinner- presiding officer or as speech-maker, y, his great compeer in letters, -s02- | Notwithstanding the poor show made by the | labor reformers in Massachusetts on clection day. Maine is about to organize a similar party. | Ifthe workingmen wish to accomplish anything in the way of reform, they will be able to do it | much sooner through one of the existing great political organizations than by trying to build up a third party. Experience has shown that. Tae Sitvarion 1 in New Yorx. —Mayor Hall states that he Tweed’s resignation in his pos- session, conditioned upon the appointment of a gentleman related to himself. He has also ten- | dered the appointments of the successors to Sweeny, Hilton, and Fields, as Commissioners of Parks, to Comptroller Green, considering that the Democratic Keformers won the victory and are entitled to fill the offices and direct the party affairs. Tae Carivat Movers.—Mr. L. U. Reavis lectured in Boston on Wednesiay night, on “The Nation and its Capital.” He deems the nation all right but the Capital mispiaced, and means to have it removed to St. Louis, where he thinks it belongs. If Reavis must have the Capital where he is himself, t would be cheaper that he should move to Washington. &7-It is denied that the British government is negotiating for the purchase of the Atlantic bie. &7 Additional accounts show that the effects of the late storm have been very serious on the coast, and in the lakes. &7 Ana Dickinson thinks the unmarried wo- man-women have a vague idea that when they get their “rights” they will one and all be pro- vided with husbands by process ot law. >IN ALL THE DISTRICTS— _nols-3t* ‘ TorS tien sizect, near K.
