Church, and the services were opened with prayer and singing, after which the associational sermon was preached by Rev. G. B. Wilcox, of N. J. from 2d Cormtbinians, 7th rT, 1ith verse. Tue delegates, numbering with the congregation, after the close of the services. were invited to the hall of the A of the New Jer- on Eaton and Mr. L. Deane, and were responded to by Rev. W. B. Browne om behalf of the visitors. During the addresses it was stated that from a mere handful the membership had increased to 250, when 150 were dismissed, and now there were 310 mem- bers on the roil. A bountiful collation was served. To-day’s Proceedings. _ The second day’ssession was held at 8x o'clock this morning, and the first half hour was spent in devotional exercises, after which Rev. W. B. Browne, of Newark +s moderator, took the ebair, and the association elected Kev. George Adams, of Orange, N H. He veferred to ‘the importance of conveying the gospel to the rich as well as the , and the means used to this time which Rave tailed. He also referred to the feeling of many who refuse to attend church on the gt6und that they have not clothes good enough to wear, and said the church itself was to blame for this feeling. To work successfully, they sbould follow Christ, not shrink from relieving distress wherever it ix to be found, lifting up the poorer classes to respectability, giving them sym- pathy. Howard offered resolutions pledging ‘ourselves to use our best endeavors, with God's help, to break down the spirit of caste wherever we meet it—tirst, by ourselves striving to lay aside the besetting sin; and second, by earnestly estreating our brethren to do the same; that we ‘wit! go out and invite people to come with us, en- deavoring to doit warmly and without pride, and give them a hearty welcome when they come to our churches; that we wiildo our best really to feel and act as if we loved onr fellow-men with ‘whom we come in daily contact as ourselves, and that we do and will pray for God to help us in this thing.” The resolutions were adopted. The vessel having caught fire, was blown up in ¢ Potomac river by order of the military au- thorities. FATHER MATTHEWS IN A ATE OF PRESERVATION. St. Patrick’s (Catholic) Chureb are engaged in disinterring the bodies in the small graveyard on the north side of the church, and removing them to Mount Olivet Cemetery. The remains of Rey. Father Mat- thews, who will be remembered as one of the most popular priests of this section of the coun- try, always foremost among the citizensin every good work, have been exhumed; also the bodies Of three Sisters of Charity. The remains of the venerable Father Mat- thews were found to be remarkably well Laas served, although buried about 19 years ago. The vestments speared perfect in form and color, and the body remained intact. Some of those Who saw the top of the lead case removed, rec- ognized the face atonce, and were startled by seeing the features so perfect, which they sup- posed had long since crumbled into dust. Among other bodies which have been, or will be, removed are those of Mr. Strand, a popular schoolmaster, who died bere over twenty years since, those of the Iron- sides family, several of Lewis Johnson’s family, and that ‘of centenarian, Mr. Keziah Bureh, who reached the age 03, and was buried here over 25 years ago. ‘Tomorrow being All-Soul’s day, solemn requiem mass will be celebrated in the church by Rev. The Swiss Association of this city will celebrate the 556th anniversary of Swiss independence on the 17th inst., with a flag presentation, a dinner, music, speeches, &e. Some days ago Tue STAR gave an account of anassault and battery by Benjamin McGraw on J.J. Hollister, which grew out of a dispute between the parties named over some money said to have been collected by McGraw for the excavation of some cellars belonging to B. F. Gibbert, which work, it was ‘alleged, was partly done by carts’ and horses borne on the payroll of the District government. Yesterday the case came up betore Judge Snell, of the Police Court, when McGraw pleaded guilty to the charge, and was fined $5, and costs amounting to $12.50, ‘The assault was made on the 2ist of October. ° Tne Case or Ex-Rerresentative STOKES.
