- nnn EVENING STAR. CROSEY &. NOYES. Largest Circulation in the District | Beading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY.. Metober 20, 1871. We shail to-morrow, as usual on Saturday, print Tue Stan in double or eight page form, containing an unusual quantity and variety of interesting reading matter, in addition to all the news of the day. As we are required to go to press at an earlier hour than usual in order to supply the exceptionably large demand for the double oth for home reading and trans- mission through the mails, we must beg our ad- vertising patrons to hand in their favors before 12 o'clock noon. It is only by observing this e that advertisers and readers can alike be Properly served. heet, mami The Tammany frauds, the Chicago calamity, and other recent engrossing topics overshad- owed Col. Jim Fisk, Jr., and he was dropped out of the New York papers for a time, but the redoubtable warner, and the railroad and op- era bovuffe impresario, was only temporarily eclipsed, and is looming up again in connection with what is known as the Fisk-Stokes row. It appears that Fisk and his partner, Jay Gould, hearing that Mrs. Helen Josephine Mansfield was about to publish the letters written to her by the firm, which it is said reflect no credit on them, determined to outwit Mrs. Mansfield, and suppress the fatal documents. With this object im view, they applied to Judge Pratt for an injunction to prevent any person from the reading or publication or copying of any of the dreaded tcuers. The injunction was granted Wednesday afternoon, and papers were served by which the affidavits of Mrs. Helen Josephine Mansfield were forcibly taken from her counsel. In these affidavits (if the Herald is to be believed) it is shown how the fair Helen sat in the tele- graph office at Jersey City with one hand on ‘the operator's instrument and the otber holding the secret cypher of Fisk and Gould, by which, it is alleged, the former communicated with ‘Mrs. Mansfield as to bis hourly progress in bay- ing up the members of the Albany and giving how much each member's vote cost, with each individual's demand, and the sum paid to these high-toned legislators per capita. ‘Then the affidavits specify how the Erie rail- Toad was abstracted by one night’s work from the eyes of the stockholders, who paid for it out of their own pockets. All these and many hun- dred other racy and astounding facts are hidden for the present from the gaze of the public by the measures taken by Judge Pratt. An at- tempt was made to get @ copy of the papers from Mrs. Mansfield, but the attempt failed miserably, as that piucky lady had already sent them toa place of safekeeping, and when the officers of the law came, they were forced to give up the search, as Mrs. Mansfield told them | that she defied them, and dared them to “ get even asmell ot the original letters which she held im her possession.” +200 ‘There is ground for apprehension that a mis- take is being made in the matter of procuring aid for the sufferers by the fires in the rural dis- triets of the northwestern states, in not having the whole duty performed by a single joint com- mittee or organization,to whose judgment and local knowledge the work of properly distribn- ting the contributions may safely be left. If managed in this way, we do not doubt that the Tesponses of the public would be more prompt andbearty. T! do not care to be called on first by this committee and then by that to relieve | the wants of one particular iocality and then of another. They only know that the people of various portions of several states have been aillicted as few communities have ever been Visited before, and they would as a rule preter to add their ® general fund, without aunty, oF township lines body made up of represen- om the diicrent localities, the duty of n according to the needs of We venture to suggest, meentration of effort d that the public be asked to benefit of the whole body of , irrespective of names isious, instead of parti reighborh catities in which the se organizat ing are specially inte We feel g Pilshed in t ‘The opinion of Chancellor Zabriskie, of New dereey, in the great railroad lease case, referred to in @ telegram in Wednesday's Star, is an important one. The case decided was that of debn Biack et al. vs. the Delaware and Raritan Canal, the Camden and Amboy Railroad, and the New Jersey Railroad and Transportation Companies. The question before the court was upon a motion brought by some twenty-one complainant stockholders, (representing 3,455 shares of stock, about one fifty-dfth of the whole.) for a preliminary injunction to restrain the boards of the above-named companies from executing a perpetual lease of their works to the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. The con- sideration specitied was the payment by the Pennsylvania Railroad Company of an annual rent of ten per cent. on the capital stock of the united companies. The decision denied the injunction. A motion for a temporary injune- tion until an appeal could be taken to the Court of Errors was also denied. As the matter now stands, the lease can be exeented at any moment. ‘The decision is, to be sure, lable to revision and reversal by the Court of Errors, and In case the lease is exeented forthwith, parties to it take the risks of a reversal of judgment, but that risk is considered as hardly an appreciable —_~ee--__ vago calamity has set inventive Amer- <ams at work studying out plans for the better trol of fire, which is, according to the pro- verb, @ good servant, but a bad master. If the et leads to safer modes of heating and ip hting Gwellings than the methods vow ueticed, some good will have been educed semso much evil. One of the latest improve- nts in cities which the enforced rebuilding of « \ieago has suggested is that of heating the on- ‘ve town with steam in a manner very similar bat by which it was formerly lighted—by eeaus of pipes running under ground from ~me central reservoir to each house. It has | <p demonstrated that steam will pass through Tepes to am immense distance, at the rate of seven miles per mimute, and with but a very —_ diminution of its heating capacity, so tha: he plan is really more feasible than at frst pre it would seem to be. +20e- The running races over the Pimlico course at Baltimore, next week, promise to attract a large attendance from Washington.
