Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: THU RSDAY.......... @etober 19, 1871. ‘Tnx Evroreas axp Nortu Aenicas Ratt. WaY.—This is the name of the great inter- national line of railroad over which President Grant, and the gentlemen who accompa- nied him from this city are taking a ride to-day. The opening of this road marks another era of progress, the enterprive being one of national importance. It connects Halifax by rail with Bangor, and consequent!y with Boston and New | York, and the great railway centres of the country, and is expected, when in proper run- ning order, to be the meansof reducing the time of passage between London and New York to six or seven days. The road rurs from Bangor to Vanc=borough, a d'si.nczof i!" m2. Here it crosses ibe St. Croix river, the boundary line between Maine and New Brunswick, and pro- ceeds to St. John, 91 miles. Thence it rans to a Point called Painsee Junction, a distance of 96 tiles; there connects with the Intercolonial Railroad, and proceeds to Truro, 116 milcs, and trom there goes direct to Halifax, 61 miles. The entire distance irom Bangor t> Halifax is 478 miles. The section between St. John and Pain- sec Junction was built by the New Brunswick government, and that between Truro and Hali- fax by the government of Nova Scotia. There is a gap in Nova Scotia 75 miles in length, between Amherst and Truro; but this is expected to be finished by July of next year. Other por- tions of the road are in operation. It has re- ceived ald from Congress, and the States of Maine and New Hampshire, and may be con- | sidered as opening under the most flattering and favored auspices. The entire cost of con- struction and equipment thus far is $4,440,000. When in full operation it is intended to make the journey between Halifax and New York a trip of thirty hours. we eee The hackmen of Washington did nobiy in behalf of the Chicago sufferers in giving the re- ceipts of their business yesterday to the relicf fund. Now let us see what the street railway companies, and especially the Avenue line, wil] do in the same direction,—say for the victims by the fires in Michigan and Wisconsin. They are | all able to give liberally, 0 far as we can judge, and this one, particularly, makes dollars in | Profits where the poor men engaged in ranning | hacks make pennies. Besides, they have special | privileges, in consideration of which they should be prompt to respond to all well-founded appeals for aid. If they want to see how cheerfally the | teaveling public can at times put up with | “standing room only,” let them run their cars one day for the benetit of our siricken brethren in the northwe-t. ———~e2-___ Among the Washingtonians and those well- known here who have lo-t by the Chicago fire, Mr. Thomas B. Bryan is undoubtedly the heav- jest loser. Just what amount he has lost we have as yet no means of ascertaining, but it must be a very large sum, as he was an exten- | sive owner in real estate in the burnt district, which contained the noble edifice named Bryan Hall, and other buildings well situated and adapted for business purposes. It is, however, | &ratitying to know that he still has a reasonable competency leit, a gcodly portion being invested im this city. Mr. Bryan was also President of the Fidelity Depo:it Company, of Chicago, Which saved all the books, papers and valuables in its vaults, and it is more than likely that his savings through this rource were very consider- | able, in bonds, securities, etc. The estate of the late Hon. Amos Kendall has | also sustained a comparatively heavy loss. Sev- eral years before his death, Mr. K. became the purchaser of asquareof ground located within the limits devoured by the flames. It was only par- tially improved, however, and asthe main value was in the ground itself, the probability isthatit will in @ little time be worth as mach as before, . especially if it should be selected tor promi business uses in the new arranga- ment of centers, ax it now bids fair to be. Senator Trumbull lost a small collection of books, and something be~ides in other persona property, but not his main law library, and | nothing in the way of real cstate. Judge T | says he feels better in having lost something than if he hed got off untouched, as one could hardly feel comfortable if not required te make ome :acrifce, when others were called on to give up :o much. Mrs. Briggs, better known to Washingtonian | ugh her nem de plume of “Olivia,” is, we are | to sorry ty see, reported to be a heavy loser by the isaster. We had much rather hear she had | lost comething of her gnshing style in literary composition than in material effects. Senator Logan’s house was not burned, the | fire not reaching far enough into the south side | to touch it. Mrs. Lincoln's house also escaped | unharmed. Mr. H. A. Chadwick, formerly of Willard’s Hotel, was engaged m the saddlery | and harness business within the burnt district, and it is probable that he bas sustained consid- erable loss, but upon this point we have no par- tieulars. It is likely that others of our residents and ac- quaintances have lost pretty heavily, bat those named above are all that have so far formally come to our notice. We hope, also, the list may | | not be cased. —— -~2ee- The Chicago Tribune comes to us since the fire | shorn somewhat of its fair proportions, but in better shape’generally than one could have ex- ted, considering the trying ordeal through which it has passed. Its present effort is in every way worthy its splendid history, and promises even better things for the future. +22 _____ / No rain has fallen at Pittsburg for about two menths, and the Obio river is lower than it has been since 1525, so low that they are talking of digging wells in the bed of the river to find nough for the boilers of the steamboats. — Scotia from Liverpool.
