++. Editer. Largest Cirealation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: @ctober 16, 1871. MONDAY. Washington has but one hook and ladder com. and the occurrence of twoextensive fires at the same tige, or one after the other, in quick as in Chicago, might result most dis- destruction of property and loss of life, for want of another truck. The importance of immediate action to remedy this defect in our otherwise well organized Fire Department will not be questioned, and we trust the measure proposed by Fire Commissioner McDevitt at the last meeting of the Board, may be successfully consummated without delay. ernment has a serviceable truck at the Wash- ington arsenal, and Mr. McDevitt moved, andit Was agreed to, that a committee inquire of the military authorities whether they will not turn it over to the District Fire Department. He » In making the motion, that during the Winter the truck of the department may get out Of repair, or may be disabled on a run to a fire, and that the consequences might be very serious. ‘The transfer of the truck will not increase the tisk of loss by fire at the arsenal, for there is no doubt whatever that our active and thoroughly drilled firemen would be able to run the appa- ratus to a conflagration there and get it in action sconcr then a gang of untrained employes at the Post could make it serviceable, even if it was bousedin the —__-+ee- —___ To the everlasting discredit of the Western Union Telegraph Company, that extortionate Monopoly raised its rates to Chicago after the fire had destroyed the business portion of the city and telegraphic communication became more important as well as more difficult. To be sure, it is explained that this only continued for a short time, and that tho extra charge was made under the pretext of covering “‘the ex- pense of bunting up persons who hed no fixed place of business or other known address; but the damaging fact remains that a wealthy cor- poration profited by a Providential dispensation to speculate upon the necessities and anxieties of those who were connected by relationship or business concerns with the doomed city, and who were bound by every tie of affection and interest to use that medium of communication at any cost. Money acquired in this way may swell dividends, but it can hardly be considered elean, or likely to be of much substantial use to its recipients. The federal gov. Referring to the amounts of personal property returned for taxation, as published in Toe Star of Saturday, it seems proper to state that the sums there given inelads, in many instances, the | par value of stocks, etc., which have little or no intrinsic value, and from which no income is re- ceived. We doubt not that a large number of the gentlemen whose names are given would be glad to close out their personal possessions for a sum far less than the figures with which they are | credited im the list as published ; other hand the names of many individuals who easonably be expected to stand near the head of such roll are not found at all. this omission is due to the errors of the copying clerks or to the failure of the individuals them- selves to respond to the request of the assessors we leave the public to guess. It isto be regretted that those persons in our midst who are just now demanding enlarged suftrage, or, rather, a greater number of elective Officers in the District, are not able to carry on their deliberations scenes which have characterized the primary meetings held in some of the wards of the city during the past week or ten days. ceedings have been in the highest degree dis- | creditable, alike to the participants and to the city at large. and must have a tendency to de- secure what, under ot! be conceded to be a just and But seli-respect i" such riotous and disgraceful manitestati n come from the: Chicago calamity absorbed public atten- ast week to such an extent that the returns « ossnpa State elections held assed withont notice.
