Curious War Incidents. At this late date any account of the siege of Strasburg would savor too much of the nature of ancient history; but a few incidents, not yet zecorded by the press, will still be of interest. ‘The first victim was a man named Ulrich, who ‘Was walking along as a projectile fell, bi ting first a street lamp and then Blanc unfortunate passer-by, woundi he died in a few days. On the of A the statue of Guttenberg, a work of Davi Angers, was struck by an obus and tly ~ jured. The second vietim was a named Umbhofer, who was taicep when ® shell fell on bis bed, kil him and his wife. All tee mast day = of the dis- aster was visit by cu trasburgers, who, later, became a familiar with’ such calamities. On the 15th of a Na- poleon fete day—the G batteries were very active, and the Strasburgers made a gim FS ke to the ‘effect that the besiegers were rating \t by fireworks, after ‘ther fevorite fashion; but the fete was otherwise disregarded in Strasburg, save that an official Te Deum was sung in the cathedral, the priests alone ing. This was true, but the number of the victims—six in reality—was greatly exag- gerated. A somewhat similar disaster occurred on the Isth of August, when a shell fellina rehool-room in another part of the city, com. pletely destroying all the furniture. Happily the school had been closed only the day previous otherwise many children would have been killed. ‘When milk began to be scarce and sick per- sons and little children suffered for want of it, the municipality published a request to ali those yet receiving th their usual supplics to send one-halt dail nearest apothecary, who would dole % out tor the use of the invalids, ‘This request was P npoonen complied with.
