EVENING STAR. CROSBY Ss. SOTES.. .- Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY.. «+. October 6, 1871. The great number of public and private build- ings now being erected in this city makes the subject of ventilation a very important one, and every suggestion of a method of introducing pure air—so essential to the health of the commu- nity—into our dwellings and all houses where le are congregated for a longer or shorter s worthy of consideration. Itis claimed by a writer in the Philadelphia papers that the problem of thorongh and perfect ventilation has for the first time been satisfactorily solved jiadelpbia Hospital. All the wards in the extensive buildings of that institution are warmed and ventilated on the same general plan, viz: Every ward (according to size) bas one or more independent hot-air chambers, and ‘one or more flues for ventilation of its own, in- dependent of any other ward, open only very near the floor, and going out at the roof. This is said to be a vital condition to success. An opening in a ventilating flue near the ceiling is represented to be fatal to it, and in the Phila- @elphia almshouse all the ventilating open- ings near the ceilings have been bricked up. In 1866, when the cholera visited the insane department of the hospital, it was the most fata in those wards where there was a strong ventilation from near the ceiling and none from the floor, but on bringing it down the cholera immediately disappeared. Not a single case originated or occurred, unless brought in, in any ward of the institution where there was a thorough ventilation from the floor or an open fireplace and chimney. To secure good ventila- tion in summer, heat is introduced into all needed parts of the house twice a week for two hours each time, and oftener if required. This warms the ventilating fines so that they draw all the time and the wards are kept sweet. It has been found by experience that if fresh air is desired from a window, it ix better to raise the the top, as the latter seriously embarrasses the | ventilation from the floor. Some persons advo- cate ventilation from near the ceiling, or the lowering of windows to let the heat escape. This will be very effectual if the openings be | large enough, but the healthful, fresh air will | go along with it, leaving behind the foul, used. up air near the floor. —_-+see-—____ As if George Francis Train, Weston, the frand. and Daniel Pratt, the great American traveler, were not peripatetic nuisances enough for one country, Mr. L. U. Reavis, the St. Louis capitol-mover, is seattering circulars over our distracted land, announcing his purpose to lec- ture this winter In every city of the country in favor of his hobby, and to distribute his pam- philet at the same time—both lecture and pam- Phiet to be furnished free of charge. The pam- phiet may be made serviceable in yarious ways— waste paper is worth 5 cents per pound—but how utilize the lecture? With becoming mod- esty he only asks that those in favor of the removal of the capital furnish him halls to lec- ture in, and that the press will give his card general publication. Reavis is welcome to this advertisement of his scheme in our columns, and we would suggest to his faithful allies in this city, the anti-improvement men, who, if | their ideas could be carried out, would do more for capital removal in a year than such a harm- | less lunatic as Reavis can do in a lifetime, that they might let him have Union League Hall for & night or two Their dull meetings, as now managed, have gradu indled down from @ dozen or two to an assemblage of one, and we believe Keavis would be able to infase some life into them, and while he could do no harm, Would furnish a more amusing entertainment than any of their local or imported orators have done + far. Don’t go back on Reavis, gentle- men, he is just as much opposed to improve- ments in the District of Columbia as any of you hout the country who have | sto be summoned as w: t been badgered by lay testimonial for Judge In the Coart of Quar- M. Chipman, a member of the bar, $25 fur contempt of court, be he under exami- nati guilty of per- jury. This righteous jndge decided that al- thong! r to elicit the truth the ingenuity | andeven the boldness of counsel Tay be exer- cised toward a witness who is obstinate or re- fractory, er who prevaricaies, to go beyond this and ch him with falsehood is an outrage upon the proprieties of the oceasion, the dignity Of the court. and the rights of the witness. a ‘The committee appointed by the bolting Fen- ton-Greeley delegates from the New York re- publican convention have resolved to support | the ticket nominated there, and make a united effort for vietory. The successful applicants for the New York city printing are journeymen printers who have reduced to practice the theory of co-operation as the best itate for strikes. = iseahantinnins 1 people of Florida proy to call NOWL_E.—The Stockhokds rs of th: mock ite get ingum Turnpike Road notiBed that @ fival distribution of the » baud will be paid o1 are he mores Mand at the Bank of Washington. &.B.
