CROSBY 8. JOYES.......Eaiter. Largest Circulation in the District , Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: MONDAY ..-0.00e-+20-00tober 2, 1871. The Northern Market. ‘The communication of “Fair Play” in favor of the Savage site for the new northern market is too long for our columns, but the points are that it is but two squares east of the present lo- cation, but two blocks from the Seventh-street and but one block from the Columbia that it is favorably situated for water ©; that the proposition of Mr. Corco- irable and in the highest degree gen- erous, but “as marketing and eating are very practical every-day things to householders gen- erally, convenience and eligibility ina market Will be of such paramount consideration to the great public concerned as will far outweigh art or art galleries of any degree of splendor or charm,” that if the market is leeated on the Corcoran square the population accommodated by the Columbia railway cast or west of Seventh Street will “have no choice in point of distance— after reaching Seventh street—as to the Central market or the Northern market,” and ‘as the Central warket will always be the best supplied, the class in question would naturally, from choice, go there;” consequently the new north- erm market would prove a failure. “ Fair Play” think these considerations should alter ovr views condemnatory of the purchase of the Savage lot. They do not. Wethink no more deplorable event could happen for the in- terests of Washington than that the committee should, in following their unaccountable predi- dection for the unsuitable Savage lot, pay the normous price asked for it, and at the same time Dffer the signal affront to Mr. Corcoran of re- fosing his noble gift. In no way can facts be twisted to make the Savage lot as eligible a pesition as the Corcoran square. Primarily, the new morket ought to be on 7th street, the great thoroughfare from the country to and through the city, just asthe Center market is, and the present Northern market. As regards convenience of street cars, it might as well be ten squaresas“‘two equares” away. The new market should be di- rectly on the railway, as is the Corcoran square. The population on the line of the Columbia Tailway will be better accommodated by trans- fers landing them direct on 7th street at the Corcoran square, than by being dropped a square away from the Savage lot; and it must be further considered that in a short time there Will probably be several other railways on let- tered streets intersecting 7th strect above K. Seme of these will doubtless cross 7th strect at the Corcoran square. It is not true that the people on the Columbi: railway would “have no choice im point of dis- tance between the Central market and the Northern market;” the Center market ison B street, the Columbia railway crosses 7th street at K street, the Corcoran square is on O street, just half the distance. The great growth of the | city is northward, and if the present Nothern | market was not placed too far out when many years ago it was located in its present position, the Corcoran square at O street is certainly not, | in view of the fact that the city has grown | far past it, out to the very boundary. And It is idle to talk of the Center market supplant- ing the new Northern market in its supplies, when the latter, at 7th and 0, is on the great avenue of country produce, and in a position to intercept it. ———_-+es--______ “The downfall of Cornell University is at —The Tribune denounces President An- drew D.
