EVENING ST CROSBY &. NOYES.......Eaiter. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY. September 22, 1871. Double Sneet. In order to accommodate both reading and advertising patrons, THE STAR will be printed to-morrow in the form of a double sheet,—a means of relief we shall probably be obliged to adopt every Saturday during the coming season. As these double issues always contain an unusually large amount of excellent and inter- esting reading matter, so there is always a cor- responding increase in th whieh business men should avail themselves. Advertisers who wish the advantage of this nity should send in their favors before epyert 12 o'clock noon, to-morrow, and newsdcalers and others desiring extra quantities of the paper should give their orders before 3 o’clock p. m. The Masonic Procession. Washington is a city of processions, and has seen many grand displays in this way, but probably nothing more imposing, ever, than that of the Knights Templar to-day. A remark- ably fine looking and intelligent looking body of men, with a uniform well calculated to set off the appearance of the wearers to the best ad- vantage, and a mode of march combining mili- tary precision of step and movement, and a dis. position of the numbers in marching peculiar and appropriate to the order, the appearance of the line as it moved up our noble Avenue— the finest street in the world for such a dispiny—was one to be remembered. ‘The shouts of the multitudes upon the side- walks, the balconies, the windows and the housetops; the waving of handkerchiefs and flags, and many like demonstrations, served to show the visitors the estimation in which they are held by the people of Washington, where Masonry is known and respected through its membership here, made up of our best and most useful citizens. We trust our visitors will leave Washington with as good an impression of us as we have of them. —— ae Philadelphia will have at least one woman voter at the next election. On Saturday last, in that city, Miss Carrie L. Burnham, accompanied by her legal adviser, went before the Board of Assessors and demanded to be registered and as- sessed as a voter, claiming to be a citizen of the United States, and therefore entitled to the privileges and immunities of citizenship. The canva-sers at first objected on account of her sex; but Carrie was not to be bluifed in that way, and expounded to the assessors the law accord- ing to Woodhull, that citizenship was not con- fined to sex, and that women, from the founda- tion of our government, had been recognized as citizens; and that now, under the Constitution of the United States with its amendments, they were justly entitled to all the privileges of citt zenship equally with man. The canvassers thereupon incontinently caved, and her name was registered, she having made the required affidavit, and she received her certificate of as- sessment, which she took to the office of the Ke- ceiver of Taxes, tendering therewith her fifty cents. With bat little discussion Mr. Beatty received her tax and gave her a tax receipt, and she went on her way rejoicing, with nothing to bar her passage to the polls on the day of the election. The same arguments which converted the Philadelphia assessors were used in this city, it will be remembered, by the ladies who made application to be registered previous to our last election, but the judges of election here, less gallant than their brethren in the Quaker city, retused to accept the new interpretation of the Constitution and laws, and none but Americans persuasion were allowed to deposit ——— great problem ot ar. cts—how best to ion of bu:'dings—bas © New York Mail says, in a schoo uct or shaft and out of the roof into it at or near the floor and at ings of the rooms, and a warm current of eve in several bu ee- ‘Tue WEEKLY STAR {or this week, contains ail about the works of improvement in the Dis- triet, and something about the anti-improve- ment men; the Social Evil Reform; the Tam- many Frauds; the athe Hunter’ three clever stories—**M Boarders,” and ‘*Found ” general news; Washington News and Gossip; racy personals, and other readable matter.
