EVENING STAR. CROSBY 5. NOYES....... Editor. —————— WASHINGTON CITY: THURSDAY.......September 21, 1971. Eight Hoars, or Ten. ‘The late labor demonstration in New York has called forth considerable discussion in the papers of that city upon “* the eight hour question.” It is treated by the Jowrnal of Commerce very tully and with the calmness and thonghtfulness pot acteristic of that paper in dealing with matters of finance and labor. The Jouraal holds that these do a very cruel thing towards the laborer who urge him to constant efiort t>shorten the hours of toil. No amelioration of his condition ever came or ever can come trom such attempts. All experience proves the fallacy of the oft-re- Peated statement that the workingmen, asaclass, will produce as much in €ight hours, if the change were made, as they would under ordinary circumstances in ten hours. Start with a suffi- client number of “ ifs” and the thing would be feasitle. If the laborer entered into the scheme with this purpose steadily in view; if he hus- banded his strength and made the best use of the Spare hours; if he trained himself in the interval for a special effort to be put forth during the prescribed term of work, and then resolutely applied his utmost energy to his occupation, the product of his eight hours would be greatly en- hanced. But to believe that all this will take place simply because eight hours becomes the Wmit of the laborer’s day is to suppose that this change will be a greater instrument of human reformation than all the influences heretofure brought to bear on the race since the first pair dweit in Eden. The Journal argues, also, that even if the la- borer could doas much in eight hours as he now does in ten, the change would not be good for him. Work isa blessing, and men do not work too much. No man was ever injured by it. Care, anxiety, and accompanying clogs of va- ions sorts may break the worker down, but plain, hard work, cheerfully and faithfally per- formed, never shortened a man’s days, or planted thorns in his pillow, or weakened his mental or moral constitution. If eight hours’ work will bring a laborer all the necessaries of life, it would still be for his advantage to work longer that he might accumulate resources for old age, that he might provide fresh resources for cul- ture and enjoyment for himself and family, and that he might cheapen the products of labor to all his toiling brethren. Noresolutionsof con- ventions no heroic courage on the partof leagues, no legislation by Parliament or Congress, noroyal decree ot King or Kaiser, no strikes or patient persistent fortitude on the part of workmen, can alter the eternal ordination that fewer hours of work mean fewer comforts for every working hand or busy brain. That cannot be altered. Itis not that capitalists refuse to grant, or em- ployers resist it, but that it cannot be done in the nature of the case. All that there fs in the world comes only as the product of brain and sinew strained and tasked ‘for this service. If more of this product in nominal amount were given to nominal laber it would purchase him no more of that he is seeking, its purchasing power being correspondingly diminished. When there is more to divide, the workingmen get more. All those who achieve any great thing | for themselves or the world work not only eight hours, but ten, twelve, or even more hours, to their own added peace of mind and length of days. ——_ 0 Brigham’s Way Out of the Difficulty. it is getting hot for Brigham Young. For the first time a United States Judge finds nimselt strong enough to make astand against polygamy in the courts of Utah. The hope and belief of the Mormons that no Mormon could be convicted of bigamy because no Mormon woman could be found to appear as a witness to her own discredit failed them. A case comes before Judge ‘Kean where a woman complains of a polyga- t as an adulterer, and demands his indictment and trial. Several leading Mormons, among them Elder Cannon, editor of the church paper, the News, who were summoned on the jury gave the opinion that polygamy was right and legal, and were set aside by the Judge as not competent for jurors. For the first time therefore, a Gentile jury has been empanneled; competent to deal with cases involring the bigamy-polygamy question. The Judge charged the m that they were to be governed by the same law principles which controtled from Maine to Montana; that murder, arson, bigamy and riot in Utah were as much crimes there as anwhere; that the peculiarities of Utah are personal and individual, and do not form part of any system or policy. He made the farther announcement that those who disobeyed the laws shall be pun- ished, and that the men of influence who tram- ple upon and defy the law and teach others to do the same, will be the first to be punished. There is much covert wrath amongst the Mormons at this unpleasant and ominous turn Of affairs, but the time has past when Brigham can summon his Danite gang to make short work of obtrusive opponents. The growing Strength of the se: cssion, Godbeyite Mormons; the influx of Gentiles into Utah in consequence of the development of the mines; the close com- munication afferded by the Pacific railroad with the outside world, have all served to break down the power of the Brigham Young party of polygamist Mormons, and it looks now as if the end of polygamy was not far distant. With Bngham’s death, and the succession of the Smith family (sons of Jo. Smith) to the Mormon rule the fall of polygamy would come naturally, as they are avowed monogamists, but its end is likely to come even sooner. Brigham Young's bu! tenacity is tempered with no little tact and cunning. When the worst comes to the worst, and the strain is too heavy to be resisted, it i* pretty certain that he will in his capacity of Prophet receive a“‘revelation,” per- mitting the Mormons to dispense with the reli- gious cross and burden of polygamy, placed on their shoulders for a season as a chastening dis- persation. Polygamy was introduced by Jo. Smith through a “revelation,” and Brigham Yeung can get rid of it—when he wants to—in the same convenient way. ———_-ee-. | 0.18. 60, 1981 Largest Circulation in the District | Reading Matter on Every Page. | FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, qm SUCCESS OF THE STIEFF PIANOS.
