‘TUESDAY. September 19, 1871. LOCAL NEWS. Beard of Public Works. More Necessary Improvements Ordered. At the meeting of the Board of Public Works esterday a number of communications asking Tor wreck improvements were referred tor re- port, and a communication from Samuel Cross, requesting that Pennsylvania avenue, from sth to lith street southeast, and Ith street eas:, from Pennsylvania avenue to Anacostia bridge, be m mized, was referred to the Bureau of Contracts, to contract with James Fitzpatrick for the work. A request of W. W. Donegan in behalf of the Christian Church to lay water- main on Vermont avenue, between N and O streets, was referred to the Wat fs have ceived, stating that the P street bridge, over Rock creek, can be completed in two weeks. A communication from A. C. Richards, Super- intendent of Police, calling the attention ef the d to the condition of the station-houses, was referred to the chief of the bureau of contracts, to attend to this and similar complaints whepa preferred. On request of Col. , com= manding the Stanton Guards, that work be sus- nded on Friday, t niversary of the “one undred days’ proclamation,” leave was ited to those wishing t> participate. An order was given for erection of street lamps on Massachn- netts avenue, between 12th and Mth streets; on the corners L and 23d streets, and on N street northwest, between 9th and i¢th streets. Geo. W. Goodal was authorired to furnish Barthok- mew hydrants at $15 cach, exchusiveof taps. 3 a ‘Two Litrex WaxpEaens—A Three-Year O14 i into the Street by ite Father —Last jored girl about eleven of age, in company with a Mttle colered years old, were brought to the station-heuse by Officer Thempson, whe found them Gages | about the sireets in the neighborhood of H am Tith streets. The girl stated that her mother, Who had been living near the steamboat wharf, died about one month ago, and since that time ste had lived with an older sister, who isthe Moeiher of the litle boy. Her sister wasa few days ago sent to the poorhouse, and the man with vhom she was living as his wie yesterday crove them out into the street, telling them to ge to the poorhouse too, since which they have been trying to find the a. and were nearly starved. They were locked up for the night, and to-day will, no doubt, be furnished with a’ pass from Judge Snell to the workhouse. John James is the neme of this inhuman fellow, and it is ascertained that after driving away his own son d1om home in this destitute condition he packed ‘vp bis eff. cts and started off to Alexandria. eae ‘THE SUPERINTENDENT OF TAXES AND As- SESEMENT? has had completed a new set of plat ‘books for the use of assessors. These have been amade by the surveyor, and each assessor by the use of these books has before him a diagram of all the :quares in his ticular assessment district, with the lots subdivision, showing ‘the size and shape of each lot with the improve- ments, if any, notedon them. These plat books have to be renewedevery five years, and each intermediate year it 1s the duty of the assesors toadd the improvements for the past year to these books, from which the valuations are made at the rates computed. The renewal of these books with the notes and figures atiached is a work of great labor. The Georgetown t book is much more aifficnit to understand, as the squares have never deen numbered, but designated by a different em. It is thought that the next lative mbly will authorize the squares for that city to be numbered ona plan similar to our own, which will facilitate the work of assess. ments. ——— Powers oF Justices or THE Peace UNDER tne New Laws—A meeting of justices of the was held last evening at the office of Sratice ‘Mil’s, at which the following were nt: J.T.
