EVENING STAR. WASHINGTON CITY: WEPNESDAY.....September 12, 1871. nan correspondent of the New York Jour Cos treating of negro labor at the posh aserts that the mass of the southern whites are perfectly friendly to the negroes and de= e to live im amity with them, recognizing the changed relations of the two classes since the wa~. and that they offer to the negroes terms which the latter do not and cannot reasonably complain of as illiberal; but that the banenf the freedman is politics, which makes him indolent, drunken, and pilfering. The editor moralizing on bis corrcspendent’s conclusions, says that, «« pr-c'sely in proportion as the colored man re- alizcs that freedom fs not absolution from work, and that what he is to receive must be earned honestly and not through the torturous ways Of polities, will he be happy and contented, and grow to the highest stature of civilization possible to his race.” This is all very well as far as it gocs; but why apply it particularly to the Colored man? Are there not white men, even in that greai center of civilization, New York, who Dave not realized that what they receive “ must be earned honestly,” but who rely upon “ the torturous ways of politics” to make their pile? Recent developments in that city would lead one to think so. ——_—__ -see- ——__ Comptrolier Connolly, otherwise known as “Slippery Dick,” refuscst> be made a scape- goat ‘or the Tammany ring, and in answer to Mayor Hall’s mild rcqucst for his retirement from office, replics that rcs orsibility attaches equally to the mayor, and that he will rot sub- mit himeelf av a sacrifice to appease the hungry appetite oD adversaric: for a vici'm. The public moxing la-t night was largely aitended, and unmistokably saccessiul in the sympathy and confidence created for the efiort, av illusteated not on'y by the applause, but by the more substantial evidence of large money contributions for its prosecution. + The Chron ‘cle announces this morning “the ac- egssion of ex-Gov.
