The Rea Yesterday's STAR contained a brief eable tele- gram announcing the death of Dr. Karl Marx, eading spirit of the Internationale. idable organization remains to be seen. The association has been from the very moment f its foundation up to the present day almost entirely the work of a single man, and that man the deceased Dr. Karl Marx, a German emigrant who resided for more than twenty years past in London. He was born in Treves, in 1818, and Was therefore in his fifty-third year at the time of bis death. He studied law in Bonn and Berlin, but soon turned all his attention to philosophy, (Hegels especially,) and afterwards to polities and political economy. In 1311 he took his professorship (Privatdocent) at Bonn, and became in the following year the editor of Bheintsche Zeitung of Cologne, the first paper openly opposed to the government of Prussia. In spite of a double «ensorship instituted over FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. W BEADY! the paper Karl Marx managed to say enough to win the sympathies of all the liberals, until then afraid to utter asingle syllable of opposition, and the government suppressed the paper by an act of force. Dr. Marx went then for safety to Paris Here he continued his liberal publications until the Prussian government demanded his expul- sion from French territory, and Louis Phillipe yielded to the urgent request. After many Vicissitudes, being driven from one European city to another he settled in London, and watched all the societies which formed them- Selves on the Continent as well as in England- ‘The Trades Unions tormed a subject of his par- ticular attention up to 1862, when the first idea of forming an international society seems to have been conceived. He originated the associ- ation in 1864, and with the assistance of s young countryman named Engels, anda Mr. Cowell Stepney, an Englishman, managed its affairs to the time of his death. The power wielded by him and his associates has been immense, ex- tending among the workingmen of Christian Europe. The influence of the society as an in- flamer of communistic republicanism has been rapidly growing, especially within the past twelve months, until it is now a bugbear in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Portugal and other countries, and the dread of it is shown in the exaggerated reports of its objects and designs, which reach us in European papers. ‘The Central Committee lately held a meeting in London, and Felix Pyat, Bergeret and other refugee members of the Commune, took part in the discussion, at which, according to reports in a Spanish paper, it was resolved to shrink before area of northeastward ‘and the the in Win cj 5 hands high, to None eed wit ean camo well recommended ~ amie 7 WANTS. a ee —__ og eee ee | PERSONAL. It was also resolved to set fire to all factories, workshops, and establishments which serve as a medium for industry, and also to burn down all depots of agricultural produce, so as to thus compel the hungry and unemployed work- men to take part in the social war. It strikes us that the authorities, in removing the hackmen from points where they may be objectionable to some of the hotel-keepers, have rather overdone the business by sending them to out-of-the-way localities where the public can't find them. In large cities elsewhere the public convenience is consulted by designating carriage stands in central localities and on prominent streets—frequently adjoining public equares and grounds where they are not in the way of business establishments. That this will have a good effect there is no doubt. The publicity of a trial in open court, is the greatest safeguard against inregular proceedings, and many hus- bands and wives with real or fancied grievances, will bear them with more patience, when an action for divorce brings with it the notoriety €f a public prosecution. —— Hon. Burton C. Cook, of Iinois, writes that the cause of his resignation is that the health of his family requires ‘his constant care. He adds, in view of some newspaper statements in regard to bis future political aspirations, that his retirement fr m political life is absolute and final. He was a valuable representative, and bis loss will be felt, especially in this quarter, because of the intelligent and friendly service he gave to the interests of the District, ———_-+ee--____ The woman suffragists are not content with their easy victories in the West, but are pre- paring for an active campaign in the Eastern ‘States. The Massachusetts Woman Suffrage Aseociation is to hold a series of mass conven- tions in every county in the State.
