“EVENING STAR, | "™ssGatanmcommmmaan |: FINANCIAL AND CO) Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page, WASHINGTON CITY: --August 30, 1S71. took from a hotel point of view in gton is not encouraging this season. he adjournment of Congress no less than ee prominent establishments for the enter- taimment of strangers—Wilard’s, the Kirkwood, Seaton House—have been closed up and niture sold out, and there are rumozs at one or two more will follow suit before the winter sets in. nding the complaintsof high prices accommodations generally made hington hotels, and in spite of the f that toown one isto be possessed of the business here does not appear to be profitable; and if we except the Ebbitt House, Which bas, by judicious advertising and good manage ment, been kept pretty full all the time, t is doubtful whether any of the houses kept open during the summer have done anything like a satisfactory business for the last six mont In fact, in the very few cases where the proprietors of Washington hotels are sup. posed to have been successful, pecuniarily, we doubt whether their profit on the money invested has been equal at any time since the close of the war to what the same amount would have yielded if used in almost any ordinary business pursuit, Why this should be so, in the face of good prices and a large and liberal patronage during a fair portien of the year, we shall not undertake to explain. But the fact is as we state, and that it exists is not only discouraging to those now in the business, but it will probably also deter some ambitious persons who have not yet made the experiment from trying to find out whether they know how to k eep a hotel. The Seaton House, as has heretofore been an- nounced, will be used for government offices, and may therefore be permanently counted out in an enumeration of hotels. Whether Willard’s and the Kirkwood will be reopened before Congress assembles, and whether the others in regard to which ramors are current will be kept open or not, remains to be seen, but the present pros- pect, at least with reference to the first two in- stances named, is decidedly against such result, as no movement is yet apparent in that direc- tion. The deficiency in hotel capacity thus ere- Sted will probably be partially made up by the opentn,; of one or two minor establishments and the enlargeszent of one or two others; but just now it looks as thong the accommodations for winter visitors will be quite circumscribed, as compared with former seasons, and that the cry next season will be not so much high prices and poor fare as no accommodations at all. This is astate of things greatly to be deplored, as there is every indication now that the throng of stran- gers next winter will be greater than ever be- fore, and facilities for taking proper care of them ought to be increased, both in extent and quality, inste: educe — os We have satisfied ourselves from personal inquiry that the reports in circulation in the erm part of the city in regard to the al treatment of the malformed colored woman, Jane Hawkins, stated yesterday, are entirely at variance with the facts, and do singular injustice to the able and con- scientious physicians who, at no little personal and pecuniary sacrifice, labored for many hours, exhausting all the resources of the modical art, to save the life of this poor woman. They could not have labored more zealously had she been the first lady in the land instead of a poor colored dwarf. ——__-+ee-____ The triple alliance in Europe seems to be an Another meeting of the 2 and German Emperors iste be held next weck, at Salsburg, when the King of Italy, ready subscribed to the “joint atti- rked out by who h: smarck and Beust at o the pact.
