i Eee EVENING STAR. CROSBY s. \OYES. . Editer. Largest Cireulation in the Distrie’ Reading Matter on Every Page. — WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY.......0+. --.Augast 22, 1971, ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer or any portion of itmay have Tas Star sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- Bess office of the paper. The Origin of Life. At the recent meeting of the British associa- tion for the advancement of science, Dr. Grace Calvert read a paper “on the action of heat on germ life,” which seems to set forever at rest the delusive theery of spontaneous generation. The paper described a series of experiments made by the author for the purpose of determining the fect of heat on living organisms. He took solution of white of egg full of microscopic life, and a solution of gelatine full of microscopic life, as also solutions of sugar and hay. These solutions were put into littie tubes and sub- mnitted to temperaturesof 100, 200, 390, 100, and 500 degrees Fahrenheit. It was found that st 100 degrees the living organisms were not at all affected, at 200 they were not affectod; at 300 they were still alive—three or four vibrios in each field, and it wasonly at 400 degrees that life dis- appeared. The experimonts were varied with the same result in every case. If, said Dr. Cal- vert, there was such a thing as spontaneous generation, he could not understand why there should net have been life reproduced in his tubes which had been heated to 400 degrees; whilst a little hfe was reproduced in one heated to 30 degrees, and more in one heated to 200 degrees. In another paper by Dr. Oal- vert “on protoplastic life,” he showed that wiule life was generated in distilled water ex- Posed tothe air in twenty-four days, no life ap- peared in distilled water from which the air was excluded. He gives detailed accounts of numerous experiments, the general result of which was that life was produced if the fluid under examination was left exposed to the air for a very short period. If perfectly sweet eggs were covered with varnish they would keep for Gghteen months, while if not so covered they would not keep so many weeks. But if there Was such athing as spontaneous generation why should not the egg covered with varnish decom- pose as soon as the other? | temenee bs ——-+e2--___. Well. | Greeley is not an enemy to be despised, but 50 far Grant seems to be master of the situation, And, from present appearances, the philosopher ot the Tritune will have to make up his mind to support him “just once” more, despite his single-term doctrine. ; Supervisor Foley, democrat, and president of the Ith wards citizens’ association, in New York, composed of men of all parties, ree cently, with other members of the association, d Mayor Hall to attend one of their meet- ul explain the charges of fraud against ings: him and other Tammany officers of the city gov- ernment. He accuses the mayor of evasion, and sé5 at we are not thus to be trifled with. Further concealment of the city and county accounts will not be tolerated. We do net doubt, however, that the criginal statement is correct.
