CROSBY S. NOYES.......Editor. ‘The New York jinues to work EVENING STAR. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL : j RENT AND SALE. __. PERSONAL, Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTO: CITY: FRIDA Augeast 15, 1871. ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer or Sny portion of it may have Tas Stax sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the Pate of Gfty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ‘Beas office of the paper. Life from Other Worlds. Professors Huxley, Darwin, and other sensa- tional ‘scientific gents,” will now have to take 8 back seat for = while, and let Sir William Thomson come to the front. He is the new President of the British Amociationfor the Ad- vancement 6f Science, and in his address at the recent annual meeting of the association he ad- vanced the theory that “every year thousands, Probably millions, of fragments of solid matter fall upon the earth. It is in the highest degree probable that there are cowndess tecd-beaning meteoric stomes—the fragments of other worlds of ufe—moving about through space. If atthe present instant no life existed upon this earth, Ome such stone falling upon it might, by what we blindly call natural causes, lead to Its be coming covered with vegetation. The hypothe. sis that life originated on this earth moss-grown fragmenta, from the rwins of another ‘world, may seem wild and visionary—all I main- tain is that it is not unscientific. From the earth stocked with such vegetation as {t could receive meteorically to the earth teeming with all the endless variety of plants and animals which now inbabit it, the step is prodigious, yet, according to the doctrine of continuity, most sbly laid before the association by Mr. Grove, all ®eatures now living on earth have proceeded by orderly evolution from some such origin.” ‘Sir William will have hard work to sustain this theory. The fall of thousands of meteoric stones has been noted, and many of them care- fully analyzed, and metals have been found, bat wever any indication of organic matter. The Gegree of heat evolved by the passage of these aerolites through the atmosphere is about equal to the melting point of tron, sufficient one would think to singe off all the moss they might have gsthered in rolling through space, besides roast- tion. Admitting, however, for arguments’ sake, what is claimed by Sir William, that life in this ‘world sprang from mos-grown fragments of another world, with which either this or a third Planet had come Into collision, and which boing itself endowed with organic life had projected its fragments upon our surface, with all their germs of vegetable and animal growth, man included; end admitting, further, that these organic germs ‘Were not destroyed by the intense heat to which they must have been subjected in passing through cur atmosphere, we are as far as ever from getting back to the origin ef life, for the question still recurs how did the germs arrive on that other orb from which we got them, and so on. Profesor Huxley ciatms that this bombardment theory is a declaratian in favor of his doctrine of evolution, remarking that ‘the forms of life thus transmitted—that is, in the shape of the spores of fungi, by meteoric stones—could not by any pos- Sdility have been anything but the very lowest elements of life; and therefore, if Sir William ‘Thomson saw no difficulty in peopling the world {m that way, it must be beéause he was 9 Darwinian at heart, and believed that all the bigher forms of life had been evolted trom the lowest.” ———_+e---___ Who Will be Governor of Jersey? ‘The candidates for the nomination for Gover- nor in New Jersey are numerous in both politi- cal parties in that State, and an active prelimi- nary canvass is going on previous to the assem- bling of the two conventions. The democratic State executive committee is divided on the Irish question, and there fs = great lack of har- mony in thé tepudliesn state committee, so that the influence of neither will amount to much in settling the claims of the rival candidates. On the republican side there are State Senator Bettle, Cornelius Walsh, the millionaire, (who will be remembered as the rivalof Frelinghaysen for the United States Senatorship,) General Kflpstrick, State Senator Torrey, and four or five others. On the democratic side there are Nehemiah Perry, killed in a former convention by his railroad General Runyon, whose generalship in the fight against Marces L. Ward brought defeat to himself and party; Jodl Parker, , the old war horse; Charles Haight, Judge Bedle, and others too numerous to men- ton, all certain that they have only to go in and win. Gaant. As the “General's” commantiestion fills two anda half closely printed columns of his organ, the Patriot, we must decline his modest request. ‘We learn, however, from his statements, that he has done a good deal for the country, and for ‘this city. The suppression of the rebellion was mainly due to hisefforts. He was continually in Febel prisons, or escaping, or being recaptured, or almost hanged, (why, why, why not quite, ob, clumsy hangman?) or being fired upon by the enemy, or, singularly enough, “by our own Datteries;” and finally, after superhuman acts of heroism, and unheard-of privations, including “fifty-four days and nights of toilsome journey- ing,” without sleep, food, or water, he escaped to close the war trinmphantly for the Union cause, and to plan and execate great national victories for the republican party. All this is very properly set forth in that stanch Republican and Union paper, the Patriot. It is very clear from the General's recital that the American people blundered into eleeting the wrong Grant for President. And it ts per- haps natural that, failing both the P: and a place on the Board of Public Works, he should seek to depreciate the republicanism of those selected. But we trust his narrative of his own brilliant services is not as apocryphal a6 his statements in regard to the political antece- dents of these gentlemen. Yet it saddens us to say—such is the envy and jealousy of human nature—that the Rame and distinguished mili- tary services of General Albert Grant appear nowhere in the records of the war. By the same adverse fortune, his name is not to be found among the tax-payers of Washington, though be assures us that he owns large amounts O€ property here. —And, by the way, since the General appears sqatly, tree mg motte nt ail a cent ne r on * mai rates being nder than thie gure. he banks ‘of GRORGRTOWN COLLEGE 5-e, 1884 commences AY OF SEPTEMBER | oo HES Yn the ects Steck {By Bankers’, Brobers’ and ‘Joly SARL will wane of el ca E PREMATURE D ee ae He Rr.. |F Bens haren ss Some MENS IAN ASSOCIATION, OORNER OF NINTH AND D STREETS, YOUNG MEN ESPECIALLY INVITED to we the BEADING BOOM, CIRCULATING LIBBARY, AND PARLORS.
