The journals all discuss the question: Who is to blame for the terrible calamity? The Swa says the explosion is just what might have been expected. The boat is old, and the engineer says that the boiler had been in use nine years. It spparently had been patched and stitched until it was as rotten as the deck. A con- | vention of thirty German societies met and adopted resolutions denouncing the Sunday laws as an encroachment upon individual rights, incompatible with the State constitution and the American idea of personal liberty. Against this movement the Evangelical churches held a large meeting last Thursday, which was also attended by a number of promment laymen, totake action against the proposed repeal of the Sunday laws. A comraittee, cor isting of representatives of nearly all the Evangelical churches of Cincin- nati, was appointed to draft resolutions and re- port hereafter; and it was determined to hold a mass weeting at Pike's Opera House last cve- ning.
