EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES... Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: FRIDAY... --July 14, 1871. THE ORANGE RIOTS. WEW Yoera quiar WESTERDAY. — Begow Bitterl inter iced by = a 1 Interview: nad No further disturbance occurred In New York yesterday. The rumor wailed in the after- hoon that a large body of men were marching down from Har! to reseue the rioters held by the police, and the SEVENTH REGIMENT WAS ORDERED OUT. The rumor proved groundless, howeyer. ‘The action of Governor Hofman was bitter de- nounced among the Irish, some of whom asserted that he would nevef live to see another ‘Orange- men’s procession. ANOTHER ATTEMPT AT RIOT. Inthe morning a gang of quarrymen, number- ing probably fifty, turned out on Ist avenue and started towards the upper part of city, with the intention of inducing their brethren employed on street improvements to knock off. The latter had, however, seen the folly of their doing so Wednesday, and refused point-blank to folow the adviec of those who wished to engender an- other broil. On the corner of 234 street and Ist avenue, where extensive blasting operations are in progress, but few abeentees were reported. At M on Square hundreds of laborers were at All attempts to engage the laborers in rsation with reference to the riot proved futile. ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer or Sny portion of it may have Tae Star sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ness office of = paper. Dr. Cather's: Moral Science Breakfasts. ‘The Kev. Dr. Cather has been giving public breakfasts in furtherance of his scheme of “Moral Science” for the cure of defective con- sciences. He calls his affair “The American and International Christian Moral Science Asso- ciation.” His plan is to visit various leading cities and invite perons of note and wealth— especially the Iatter—to a breakfast, and after the coffee and cakes and other good things have been disposed of, he unfolds his scheme in a captivating little speech and invites: member- ship subscriptions at the rate of $50 for laymen, clergymen half price. He came to Washington, lately, and gave a breakfast at the Arlington. Some of our good citizens were <avorably im- pressed by him, and thought Tax Star was unduly suspicious in asking for more light in regard to him and his Society. Itseems, liow- ever, that other people want to know something about him and what disposition is made of the funds he has received. Now, a circular has been issued by the “Committee” in answer to anxious enquirers stating that they have paid to Dr. Cather for traveling and other expenses $2,050, and a salary of $2,500 per annum, altogether making @ gross expenditure of $4,559. The treasnrer is short $1,000, and he is sending around to the delinquent subscribers, and the Sarat mask cussion asneng. RIOTERS DISCHARGED. All the workmen employed upon the boule- vards and parks, who left the public works in disobedience to Fettive orders, were discharged esterday, and ans and Italians engaged in their Mead. A partof the Tist Cac ae and Ist cavalry were ordered to the point mentioned, Dut no disturbance oceurred during the day. The Tribune of to-day publishes an account of an interview of its reporter with Mayor Hall, in which the latter assumes the whole responsivity of Kelso's order forbidding the parade. Ho d lee fends it, and argues that the event has proved its wisdem. He refused to state whether Gov. Hoffman had previous knowledge of it, and looks ge the Governor's prociamation as similar to he reversal of an inferior court by a court of appeals. The Mayor affirms that the Police Commissioners, democrats and republicans, | were in favor of Kelso’s order. He is suffertny considerably, his for the propogation of moral science, and the cure of defective cor ciences. Is Jim Fisk a Here or a Coward?
