Shuman, charged with murder of Henrietta Paddon on the 2th of Mavch BS conan. in the minal Court (Ju lumphreys)—Assistant District Attorney eectaenen prosecuting, and Messrs. Shuman) then and there knowing the said leadly poison to be such, and that the said Hen- tta Paddon did take and swallow down a large quantity of said poison so to the jurors aforesaid known: by means whereof she (the said Hen- Yet n) then and there became sick and greatly ered in her body, and of the poison aforesaid so by her taken and swallowed clown as aforesaid, and of the sickness occasioned thereby * * on the 2ist day of March did defence. died The accused, who is apparently about 35 years ge, was brought into court fore the Open- ing, and took his it in the dock. A. G. Riddie and J. P. Tusiin—took a seat between them and frequently conversed with them. here was some little delay occasioned by the non-appearance of Dr.J. F. H: n, the physi- cian who made the ¢ mortem examination, whose absence was uted for i ness, Dr. Burrows appearing with a certificate that he Was too ill to appear. After a consultation, in which the defense urged that the trial proceed, Mr. Harrington said he would be willing that the case should go ou without that witness. ‘The prisoner was arraigned standing at the Clerk’s desk, and in answer to the question by t ¢ Clerk responded * Not guilty The District Attorney stated that he would not a kKaverdict of murder, but would be content i the jury found a verdict of mansiaughter. The witnesses were excluded, and 11 0’¢lock Mr. Harrington opened the case, stating that under the indictment they would ask a verdict of mansiaughter.
