EVENING STAR. CROSBY S. NOYES....... Editor. Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: TUESDAY... July 11, 1871. The Star by Mail. Persons leaying the city for thesummer or ‘any portion of it may have Tae STAR sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- mess office of the paper. Starting Right. ‘The selection by the Board of Public Works of an Advisory Commission of the character of Gens. Humphreys, Meigs and Babcock, and Frederic Law Olmstead, Engineer of the Cen- tral Park, New York, shows that they not only Propose to carry out a grand system of public imprevement for the District, but that they mean to have the best engineering advice thay | the country can afford in laying out that system. There has been some ignorant abuse, and some abuse with a motive, of our District gov- ernment by trresponsible or anonymous writers from here; but the the better class of corres- pondents have quite uniformly taken pains to treat the new government and {ts plans of im- provement with fairness. Here is what the thoughtful and well-informed ‘Washington correspondent of the New York Times says in this ip coamention: “The com of improvements made by the ~r 3 ‘ublic Works some tme weight seems to be work- The statement presented by Collector Slater to the Legistatare yesterday, ceipts and disbursements of the Collector's office tor the year ending Jutie 30, 1870, will be found Of interest. The New York Times pitches into the police savagely for not breaking up or at léast partial- ly suppressing gambling dens. It asserts on the authority of certain prominent gamblers that the police are bribed to keep quiet, and gives in- formation as to where over fifty gambling helis are in nightly operation. It further says that the superintendent of police can break up gam- bling if he will, and states as a singular fact that in no single case has @ gambler ever been con- vieted in New York. — es Only “‘a switch misplaced,”—that was all that eagused the Newark railroad butchery! More complaints from high ground citizens about the scarcity of water. Aren’t the House Comm 'ttee about ready to report the bill for the new main? —————_-+ee-—______ ‘The New York World is not happy over the Bowen pardon, and terms it ‘an offense against syntax, truth, and common sense.” ——_—_-+ee- (AN AUSTRALIAN Sc some millions of do! called out the volun- erected earthworks, and. s fleet to repel the filibusters, before y discovered that the story was a Caprat Acars Devzarep—Baez has edto Azua after Cabral.
