Largest Circulation in the District Reading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON CITY: ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer or any portion of it may have Tar STap sent to their address for such time as they desire, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- Panied by the money, should:be sent to the basi- ness office of the paper. ——— The President Interviewed. ‘The voble army of interviewers, who are tow making a summet campaign through the coun- try, have made a descent upon President Grant at Long Branch, and a Herald reporter seems to have succeeded in drawing from him same Pretty frank expressions of opinion in regard to public mem and measures. In reference to the McGarrahan claim, the President is represented as saying that he knew little of Its merits, but is desirous that nothing shall be left undone to secure justice. The at- tacks op him in relation to the mstter are en tirely groundless. When leaving Washington for Long Branch he rode with the agent of the ew Idria Company, on his invitation, to the depot. What ensued is toll by the President as follows: « He asked had ve ap gp to having the icGarrahan case re-opened. I said, « Certainly meet tho feat Meet be tomown apse tho matter. If the of the Interior r Bi i be The proper sum will then be ‘collected in regard to the Chase-Vallandigham letter the President said that the Chief Justice was triendly to Vallancigham and friendly to the de- mocracy, and although Sprague said his father- in-law would not accept a nomination from either party yet ‘that doesn’t matter. Chase wants a nomination for the Presidency.” The President is represented as replying in answer to the question, do you think Hancock will be a candidate? “Hancock! Of course he will, Han- cock is dy: g for a nomfhation!”” On the San Domingo question the President ‘Said: “When I suggested the iety of that inland, torte. reasons Pally eiatedd ten message to Cony I believed that the people desired « foothold in the West Indies, and Fattea accordingly. It was always my desire to ear oan out the wiskos of the people. I will now await the expression of public epinion on the St. Do- mingo question. It remains for the people to | say whether any further steps shall be taken to- ward annexation.” ‘These professional interviewers are strictly impartial, and we have no doubt they hare ready had talks with Chase and Hancock, and will speedily tell us what these personages hate to say about what the President said of them. ——~+ee- Proper and Improper Elevations. While the bill requiring the Washington and Georgetown Railroad Company to put their tracks on south 7th street on grade was under consideration in the Council yesterday, a com- munication was read from the president of the Company stating that he proposed to relay the track, but that the work had been delayed for the Teason that the City Surveyor had been so en- gaged that he had not been able to give the proper elevations. Technically the term “eleva- tions” may be all right, but, in plain language, what is wanted for the track on south Tth stroo, is depression, and a good deal of that. When north 7th street was paved the surveyor happened © give the railroad company some very improper elevations, or rather allowed it to keep them, making it necessary to pave up to them, whereby the street was ruined for any other than rail- road uses. We hope the surveyor will not make he same mistake with his clevations on south 7th street. <0 ‘The republicans of Ohio did a very fair day’s work at their State convention, held at Colam- bus yesterday. In addition to placing themselvee on a stable and popular platform, they put in nomination a State ticket in which the conside- rations of geograpical location, recognition of the various elements composing the party, gene- #al ability, and special fitness for the several ‘offices to be filled, were 90 judiciously weighed and nicely adjusted as to make it one of the strongest placed before the people of that State by either party fora longtime. As matters naw stand, we see no reason why the ticket should not be triumphantly elected, and the next Legiala- tare also be secured by a handsome hus insuring a republican successor to Mr. Sher- man in the United States Senate. By the constitution of New Hampshire, Cath- olies are ineligible for seats in the Legislature, and the attention of the House of Delegates has been officially called to the case of five members of that body who belong to the proscribed eburch, but it is not likely any farther action will be taken, as 8 number of that faith have bad seats in the House for years past without any attempt being made to oust them. —_———_—+02-____ ‘The proceedings of the Board of Health to- day, reportec in another colame, in reference to resistance of the Pound Master and threatened riots by the hog owners will be read with in- terest. ———_+-- -_____ ‘The Maryland republican State convention to nominate candidates for Governor, Attorney General and Comptroller of the Treasury will weet in Baltimore on the twelfth of September. + eee And now it is said that Cluseret and Rochefort propose to come to this country.
