EVENING STAR. Largest Cireulationin the Distri Beading Maver_on Every Page. ASHINGTON CITY: ‘The Star by Mail. Persons leaving the city for the summer ér any portion of it may have Twe Sram sent to their address for such time,aa they desize, at the rate of fifty cents per month. Orders, accom- Panied by the money, should be sent to the busi- ‘Bess office of the paper. ' oe The Star in a New Dress. According to promise, Tue Star appears to- day in a new dress throughout,—furnished, as has been the case for many years past, by the old established type foundry of Lewis Pelouze, Of Philadelphis—and we think our readers will | agree with us that it makes 8 very Tandsome | appearance; but even this will be improved in a | few days, when the type, after a little use, will | teke the ink better and furnish a clearer im- | Pression. Usually the change of dress is made the o¢ca- | sion of a little self-praise and congratulation in newspsper offices; but, owing to the great wear | and tear of material incident to the high speed | at which our lightning press is driven and the large editions printed each day, the renewals of type in the history of Te Stan have been so frequent as to excite little remark, either on the part of ourselves or our readers, and we only Tefer to the circumstance now as a gratifying mark of the prosperity of the paper, and as an evidence that a generous support will always be met by corresponding improvemonts on Part. This we conceive to be the fittest man- “? of returning thanks for the liberal and con- tantly patronage STAR since it came into its present hands. ee ___ The farmers of the western States are be- ae = coming seriously alarmed in regar to the rav- ages of the potato bug, and not without good reason. Col. Friedrich Hecker, a scientific fare mer of Belleville, Miineis, who has been investi- gating the matter, saysthe bug is a native of the canons of the Rocky Mountains, where it feeds on the wild potato. It left its original haunts in 1864, and is traveling eastward at the rate of about one hundred and fifty miles a year. It has already reached the Alleghany Mountains, the line of its march being over Iowa, northera Hilincis, Indiana, Michigan, and Obio; and wherever the potato is fond in abundance this destructive insect is likely to make its way in time, though it does not thrive in a southern climate. ~_—re-__ . And now the irreverent seamps who poké fun at Grecley’s eseays on farming, are undertaking to pull dewn his proud fame as a statistician. He is writing about the Texans. He says that the water is so bad that the bad coffee and worse whiskey is justifiabl. ‘Texas, he says, wants ten million panes of glass and ten thousand glazers to set them. She wants fifty thousand cooks, twenty thousand school teachers, ten thousand raisers of milk and berries between Houston and Galveston. He adds that there are a hundred such enterprises waiting mento develope them. As Texas has Only some 800,000 population in all, it is easy to see what effeet upon his “figures” the disuse of “Lad water” had upon the philosopher. ———_— re —____ Mr. C.F. Varley, the electrician of the Atlan- tic Telegraph Company, has broached the novel theory that earthquakes are due to subterranean lightning, and in proof of its correctness states that he observed a few moments before and a few moments after the earthquake of the 17th of March, powerful positive electrical currents rushing toward England through the two Angio- American telegraph cables, broken near Trinity Bay, Newfoundland. The French Atlantic cable was disturbed at the same time, and so were many of the English land lines; but the only observations as to the direction of the cur- rent were those made by Mr. Varley in the broken Anglo-Amertean telegraph cables. ————o-__ Anthracite coal in Philadelphia if now down to about the prices current immediately before the suspension, and yet the Lehigh region Proper, with its immense capacity to suppt; is forwarding searcely any. The Ledger aseribes the fall in price, first, to the fact that consumers are disposed to consult the future of the market for coal, which they very naturally reason will be over-supplied as soon as all three of the great anthracite regions are worked up to their full capacity; and second, to the fact that the Usual summer coal trade is exceedingly dull, and it is some two months yet to the time when domestic consumers begin to put im their Winter's fuel. ———___-«ee-- The Photographic Convention in Philadelphia was yesterday considering the place for next year’s Convention, when ene wanted ‘St. Louis chosen, because there, he said, could Be seen the fastest horses and the prettica Women. We can't say that we ever heard of a strike by millionaires, but if such a thing should happen, we promise to go for the Bloated Aris- toctats, hip and thigh, snoot and breadbasket. 2 ‘The New Hampshire House of Delegates yes- terday completed their organization by electing a democratic clerk, assistant clerk, sorgeantat- arms, and doorkeepers, by a majority of two. —__ ore —___ Tur Weert Sta for this week contains all about the Labor Strike; the Bowen Bigamy ‘Trial, and other current topics; several Capital Stories and Sketches; all the Local News; the | ‘Tye sbore GOODS $Id latest Telegraphic News from all wor!
