The effect in New Jersey, the Garette thinks, will be to withdraw the, United Companies as a dis- turbing element in New Jersey politics. The Pennsylvania company now controls over fouT thoasand miles of railway and aome ot the mast important commercial and industrial interest* of the country, and have large schemes in pros- peet which will occupy their attention too much 4 allow them to dabble in local matters there. ‘Therefore the Gazette concludes the “monepoly’ will no longer restrain the enterprise of railway perators in New Jersey, and expects to see a new road fairly jump acro-s that Stata. it is stated by the Philadelphia Jaquirer that the Baltimore and Ohio railroad endeavored to Open negotiations for the lease of the Camden and Amboy and its branches at a higher rate of guarantced interest than that offered by Penn sylvania, but that the offer ‘did not seem to exercise any influence on the deliberations of the committee.” In the interests of Washington we should hope not. It will be a very sorry day for this city when Mc. Garrett gets a mo- nopoly hold of more of the connecting links in the line of ratlroad between here and New York; and om the other hand ft will be to our advantage should those connections fall into the bands of rival companies to the Baltimore and Obio company. If this should spur Mr. rrett op to build his threatened air line from Washington to New York all the better. Com- peting roads will ensure us lower freights and better accommodations. At present Washing- ton bas no through connection with New York, and we suffer from the fact in a vaeiety of ways. Take, for instance, the discrim- ar short, 1% New York, Aj lour steady. Inthe seven city townships of Wheeling only 485 votes ware cast—311 for the amendment to 174 against; less than one-tenth of the fall vote of thosa town- ships. The only other point heard from is Moundsville, where a few votes were thrown, all against the amendment. In explanation of the apathy, it is suggested that the amendment contained features displeasing to a very large number of both parties. The New York World seeks to make political . Capital out of the proposed discharge of employes of the printing bareau on Saturday, by heading the announcement “After The Election.” a> those to be disebarged are mainly females, and as women did not vote at our election, there does not seem to be much point to the World's suggestive heading. The truth is that the neces- ity for reducing the force comes solely from the fact that the New York and other powerfai bank note companies had influence enough with ‘Congress to recure this work for themselves to the ptblic loss, since it can be done better, more “ately, and more economically here under the -mediate supervision of the government. ‘The publication of the names of persons who present their claims to the Southern Claims ‘Commission is likely to be damaging to some of tbem. Already there @ appeared, in the published list, the names of several ‘persons whose claims were rejected by officers of the Qoartermaster's Department in this city, be- cause of the known duloyalty of the claimants. ‘The commission, it is staied, is in daily rece'pt of information in reference to the Standing of some of these claimants during the war, which effectually block their “little game” to #1) cir pockets at the expense of a government which they tried to break up. : — see: == The report that the Baltimore and Ohio Kail- s—H.
