CROSBY S. NOYES....., Editer. Largest Circulation in the Distriet Reading Matter on Every Page. | WASHINGTON CITY: WEDNESDA¥.........-April 19, 1871. “ Last Werds to Voters." As the Territorial election comes off to-mor- row our cotemporaries are dealing out their “‘Last Words to Voters.” Tee STAR says: Vote for the most useful men, men of character and ability i at the same time, men who can be of service to the Territory, men who have the capacity and the rtuence to advance the interests of the com- munity they represent. For instance, General | Chipman and Mr. Merrick are both men of high | character and fine abilities, but when it is ecessary to decide which of the two can most * tviceably represent us in Congress there can be but one answer—Genera!l Chipman is the man. Mr. Merrick elected a3 arampant demo- czat to @ republican Co at every tarp. To seni bim ap to the Capi- | would be to flaunt the hostility of the people this Territory in the faces of the majority in Congress in a way that would make thaf majority solidly inimical to every District nterest he shor undertake to advocate. This is not the way in which practical people to business for themselves. If they employ a aywer they select the man who can intlaence (be court and the jury; most certainly not the ove against whom both court and jury are prejudiced in the start. And nothieg can be more idle than the idea put forth by partisans that by a probable turn in politics Mr. Merrick ‘aay come to represent the majority in Con- gress. The resalt of the Connecticut election ~bows that the day of a democratic House ts far tant, and in any event the Senate must be decidedly republican for many years. « Legislature, too, should be im harmony with the Administration and with the Terri- torial executive, im order that our new form of <Overnment may start under favorable auspices and havea fair trial. Much is hoped by citi- tens interested in the welfare of the District trem the new mode of government, in the reform of abuses, retrenchment tn the waste and profli- gacy of the old municipal system of affairs, and in the energetic, Judicious, and prudent execu- ton of public works on a thoughtfal, compre- tensive plan for the improvement and pros perity of the city and Territory. Nothing could be more disastrous for the future of the Terri- tory than to elect a factious opposition House o} Delegates, thus establishing a dead-lock be- tweeu the tr stroying all prospect of eflgcting a business-like © rganization. Let us elect a Delegate to Congress who can serve us, and @ House of Delegates adapted for practical business—no¥a body of factious par- sans whe have po other mission than “to make BKome how!” against Congress and the Executive, ———-+ee-____ Last Dying — of Merrich’s Mixed bool Baby. And now we po the Patriot making a last effort to relieve Mr. Merrick of his unhappy mixed sehool bantl: by a disrepatabdle roor- back to the effect that Gen. Chipman, in a a last night, in answer to an interrogation u regard to the school question, answered, “Lf you don’t like mixed schoois, you had better take your children away from the District.” We have to say that this statement by the is a disgraceful eleetioneering falsehood, anworthy of the most reckless partisan paper. Chat it eLould appear in a paper claiming dig- sity and character can be accounted for only n the theory of utter desperation over ensured What Gen. Chipman did say in bis speech last ght was that he had no disposition to distarb present condition of the schoo! system; that g the canvass be had heard no expression or of mixed schools; and that it was a matter he would leave with the people. He de- clared himself, as he has done heretofore in his speeches, in favor of anequal distribution of | e school fund, and of tree and equal educa s for all, but said no word that could be tor- red into advocacy of mixed schools. Usually tying roorbacks of this kind, pat oat jast on the eve of an election, do more dumage to thoce sttering them than to the party they hope to niure, and we have no dowbt it will be so ia + case. ‘The fool-killer ought to be on hand to dea th the zany who originated the story tele- bed from this city to the northern pre. mn 1573, in January or Febraary, there will m the national capital no lees than one hun- ‘red thousand ex-rebels banded together under caths of the kukiux klan, with arms and ammunition at their command. A great tour- nament will ke held in this city at that time, according to this veracious report, and this immense army can come here without attract- ug attention, and when the counting of the electoral yote jor President and Viee Presi- «dent takes place, should it be deemed necessary ‘© throw out the votes of certain Southern States because of their allege: disloyalty, these kokiuxes will rise in a body and demand that these votes be counted, thus electing a demo- cratic President. “What ther,” it is triamph- y asked, “can our little standing army of thousand United States soldiers do against a formidable foe * —s tie Nobody wants mixed schools, uot s word is . im their favor, and we shal! not have them unless Mr. Merri¢k is sent up to the Capitol as our representative with a mixed school chip on bis hat, daring Congress to knock it off. Then we sould be pretty sure to get them. The way them to ensure mixed schools is to vote for Merrick. — The Crispin diffeulties in Baktimore bave been settled. The employers agree that their ‘women employes shall belong to any associa- tion they see fit to join, provided it does not in- terfere with their duties, and the Daughters of St. Crispin have therefore gone to work again, and the Sons of St. Crispin, who so gallantly tollowed them out, have retarned to their shops, — — ‘The rage for mititary companies at Kichmond, Va. is at fever heat. Nearly all the old mili. tary companies bave been reorganized. The arms appropriated to Virginia under the militia law will soon be all taken up. we iS1a ANMIVERSABY ars or THe YOUS@ MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATION, Will take place in LINCOLN BALL, MONDAY EVENING, April See 24th.
