CLOSE OF THE COMONAR’S INQUEST THE VERDICT, "i Death from Potsem & Dr. Be \dmimistered b: map te Produce ? bortion. ‘The jury of inquest impanneled on Taestay last by Coroner Potter to inquire into the eanse of the myrterious and sudden death of Henrie ta C, Paddon adjourned until to-day, as stated in ‘Tam Stag of Tuesday last, which contained a report of the testimony taken up to the time °° adjournment. That testimony developed 2+ facts that Henrietta C. Padden, a young ai handsome woman—the divoreed wife of aso. dier named Geo. B. Welles—went to the house of Sarab Lewis, alias ‘‘ Madam Tarner,” on the corner of 10th and © streets,on Monday last, abent llo’clock a m.; that shes after- was » and that in a few hours afier her arrival at the bonse she died, that Mrs. Lewis sent to the central guard- house to notify the police, who took charge of the corpse and removed it to the cert aard- house, where it remained until identified by the mother of the deceased woman; that an autopsy was held by depnty coroner Todd, assisted by Drs. Hartigan. Brookheimer and Rodrigne, when it was discovered that the woman was enciente, and the examining physicians came to the conclusion that an attempt bad been made to produce abortion by drags, which re- sulted in death, that the stomach was removed for the purpose of a chemical analysis of its contents, and that subsequently Pr. Shuman and Mrs. Lewis were arrested and held to await the result of this analysis. The jury of t tral guard-house this morning,“at 10 o'clock. TRE PRISONERS had been brought over from the jail this mora ng and placed m the ceils at the central ga. use. and at the appointed hour the jarymen and the witnesses were ali present.” Before proceeding to take further evidence, Dr. Todd Tead t the Jury the testimony given by Drs. Hartigan, Brookbeimer and Koderiqueon Tues. day last, which may be brietiy summed up in the following language used by Dr. Hartigan at that time in referenee to TRE CAUSS OF DRATH. He testified that ‘death was caused by the administration of some irritant animal or vege- table poison, probably belonging to the class of medicines known a8 emmenagogues. Sach produce a victent shoek to the system. irritate the stomach, and congest other organs.’ Dr. Thomas Antisel, chemist tothe U.S. Agri cultural Department, was the first witness sworn this morning, and testitied that he mace A CHEMICAL ANALYSIS of the stomach on Tuesday last. The stomach was small and contracted, and showed decid: * inflammation. Witness could find no traces of poison in the contents of the stomach. The coudition of thatorgan was such as to produce cleath from the high state of intiammat He was of the opinion that something was taken by or administered to the deceased, to produce the results noticed, but no traces whatever could be found, as it was probably taken many hours be- fore death, in which case it would have been removed either by vomiting or the naffiral pro- cess of digestion. From the history of the case and trom the condition of the brain, lungs, and kidney, death was caused from the condition of the stomach, which was the result of some pow- erful irritant. Death from natural intiamma- hon of the stomach seldom occurs. Such cases are very rare. H. O. Noyes testified that he went to house No. 405 U street on Monday, when he learned of the death of the woman. It was iu the afrer- noon, between 2 and5 o'clock. Sergeant Ver- non came to Tue STaR office and reported the case, and witness started ai once to the bouse to ascertain the particulars; was invited in by the woman Lewis, and went up stairs.
