_EVENING STAR. | * CRONRKY S. NOYES...... Editor. Largest Circalation in the District Beading Matter on Every Page. WASHINGTON OITY: FRIDAY wssone--eeeeee -- ‘The Senate did a judicious thing yesterday | in makinz the Bladensburg amd Seventh-strect turppikes free roads, but an unwise one in striking out, on motion of Mr. Sawyer, the ap- | propriation for the repair of the Chain Bridge. | Every member of Congress fe interested in | keeping the cost of living down in Washington: and to do this it is mecestary that the commun! the country in every direction | be improved, and the farmers, drovers and gardeners have casy secess to our markets. By the abolition of the tarnpike nuisance, and the improvement of the present turnpike roads onthe Maryland side, much may be done in this direction; but one of the most important feeders to the city is the Chain Bridge road, ani, im fact, most of the stock brought to Washington comes from Virginia by that road. It is unnecessars to say tif the drovers are unable to crots the Chain Bridge, and are com- pelled to pay the enormous toll at the Aque- duct Bridge, the consumers in Washington have to pay the additional expense. It is understood that the action of the Senate in striking out the appropriation was in conse- quence of the interested misrepresentations, made at @ late hour iast night by the Aquedact Toll-oridge Gompany, to the effect that the: > travel over the Chain Bridge, and that the expenditure of government money there was not needed. ‘The following figures giving the travel over the Chain bridge for the year ending July 1, ist 1, shows the falsity of these interesting state- ments of the Toll-bridge Company: Horses and ¥.ders, "2,195, horses and wagons, 35,4; cattle, 25,550; hogs, 7,500; sheep, 49,275. It is to be hoped that the.conference commit- tee will reinstate the appropriation. so = In view of the high prices of anthracite coal which are likely to prevail, the question of substitating therefor bituminous coal for do- mestic ase is being discussed by the newspapers. If the difference in price should continue to be as creat as at present, the mass of people in the feaboard cities will be forced to put up with the smoke and grit of the soft coal, if that evil attending its use cannot be remedied, but we believe that it can be. Inventors have not ex- hausted their ingenuity, and the patentee of a Stove which will barn bituminous coal without allowing the escape of smoke an: cinders will not ouly realize a fortune, but be lauded asa public benefactor. Presidemt Tames C. Clarke, of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company, has just issued a circular showing that the total cost ot Camberland coal, delivered on vessels at Georgetown, D. ©., is $4.10 per ton. The freights by vessel range from 69 cents per ton (to Annapolis, Md.,) to $3 per ton (to Augusta, transportation to New York city being about $1.25 per ton, making the cost of the coal delivered ip that ss eral Logan was “on the rampage” se yesterday in opposition to the appropri- ation for a new State Department building, and ventilaigd his Capital-moving theory to a consi-lerable extent. did not seem hopeful Of its immed: bat said that when the West got its new apportionment then we suould see what we -hoaid se Unfortunately for General Legan’s hopes the effectual qutetus has been put ufion the Capital-moving b umbug by the western people themselves; and no ridi- cule and depreciation heaped npon ft has been 80 severe as that of the western press. Even the C! 0 paper that ori, 4 the project long sinee threw up the sponge and abandoned | the further advocacy of the absurd project as a hopeless waste of printer's ink. -20e- Mes-rs. As the House republican caucas last night renominated all the old officers, and as afiairs at that ena of the pitol seem to be running about im their old groove to-day, it is to be presumed that the great triad party of organizera and smashers-1 have reconsidered their purpose. see.
