EVENING STAR. << S. NOWRS,...0. Editor. Largest Cireaaton in the Dstt Reading Mattor on Every Page. We bave the highly important and gratiZring intelligence by c: this afternoon that « treaty of Peace between France and P: was signed today. France is to par Germany 0,000 thalers, and cede Alsa: 4 Lor- reine, including Metz and Nancy, to the vic tors, bat ts sparéd the humiliation of if tri- vmphal march through Paris. — Gove ‘The tact that the various bank note engray. mpenie~ have had an active lobby Washi ton opposing the preposition to have the gov- ernment do its own printing, is commented upon with severity by several of the leading papers of the country. The Cincinnati ¢ mercial, after considering the matter at som length, expresees the hope “that Congress wil! be deliberate in its action on this question, and be guided by what shall be discovered to be the best interests of the government, rather than of the persistent and ever-clamorous engraving companies.” Since the government's first experiments the line of printing, these companies have ca: ried their attacks upon the system to most bitter aud, it 1s believed, unscrapnious ends. ‘They are not only opposed to the government doing such work, but also to the National Bank sys. tem, since under the old plan of multiform ys. tems of S ate Banks, and the great number of banks, with perpetual changes, they had most extravagantly fat jobs of engraving in- creased, too, in their richness by the fact that the great variety of bank notes made the Work of counterfeiting much more easy and necessitated more frequent changes instyles of notes. It is anotorious fact that scarcely any stock can compare in profit to that of the en- graving companies, and the more fully they can control or monopolize the business the more powertul they become to prevent a change and to break down fair competition. The work of printing now carried on by the government is done so wel economically and with such admirable system of checks against traud that it would seem to be the height of folly to make any concessions for the benesit of the rapacious engraving companies. ‘The government ought, in fact, to have all work of this kind done bere under its own eyo and super vision. —_—+-15e--—__ Brigham Young itn Luck. ‘The great salt monopoly of Syracuse is likely to find a pretty formidable competitor ta its product in the article manufactured from the waters of the great Salt Lake in Utah. An en- terprising citizen of that Territory has gone inte the business with a view of seeing whether it cannot be made profitable, and the resu'ta ao far areteth gratifying and encouraging. An sanalysis made by an experienced eastera chem- ist shows the Utah salt to be purer than the famows product of Turk’s Island, and it has ‘been found that, notwithstanding the present high rates of freight on the Union and Centra! ‘Pacific railroads, it can be furnished to points as far cast as the Mississippl river and as far Weet as San Fran ‘Oats prolit to the manu. factarer. The mistakes of state- ment in his speech against annexation have already been illustrated through the reports of the correspondents who accompanied the com. missioners and now there is a new case in point- Mr. Shepherd, the correspondent of the Rrpu ficon, says: “Dr. Howe, of the commission, received a letter by the Tybee trém Senator Sumner, in * » the writer wildly asserts that there is a revelation in progress in the Serbo or the Ciboa districts. The retail price, which was $4.0 per ton on the Ist of December, now ranges from $11 to SW. The papers devote considerable space to the subject. The ost thinks the high prices are brought about by the miners, who know that the market is overcrowded by them, and hence endeavor to maintain their position by the bravado of @ strike. The World, on the other hand, says it has peen shown that the difference in the wages of mincrs between their receipts and their demands is an intinitesimal fraction of the ditlerence between what the Price of coal ought to be and what it is, and that the responsibility of the rise canuvt be evaded by those who have brought it about, namely, the rich companies. who are guilty, it say?, of a flagrant swindle, adding that « ‘dif- ference of from $5 to ¥7 aton in the price of means to mgny thousands of families in York and Philadelphia the ditterence ba- tween decent comfort and abject destitution. An adjourned meeting of coal operators, coal carrying compapies ani irou manufacturers Was held at Philadelphia yesterday, at which a new basis for labor and transportation was laid down. It remains to be seen what effect their action will Bave in reducing prices. st0e- Jcst So—A correspondent Suggests that the friends of Ex-Mayor Bowen who are importa ng the President to appoint hima Governor, should, instead, nominate him for Delegate in Congress. By this means he (Sayles J.) «will have a fair opportunity of testing bis POpalari- ty with the people of the District.” — ‘The coroner's jury have decided that nobody was to Diame in any way for the awful New Hamburg disaster on the Hudson River raij- road.
