on™ ; : EVENING STAR. YS. NO WES. coos Bditor, ae The President oe the St. Bemiugo Expedition. ‘The safe arrival of the steamer Tennessee at ber destmation with the St. Domingo Commi-- sion, after the gloomy vaticinations of the ©pponents of the annexation of that island, is & favor le angury for the suecess of the Presi- policy of enlarging our national doma n ceful and legitimate way. amity to look coolly over the field can to see that the President's project for the on of St. Domingo has been steadily Exining favor with the mass of the people since it was firet broached; and it will be a daring party. or public man whe will in the future set itself or bimself up to resist this grand acqnisi- tion. The idea of territorial expansion appeals irresistibly to the American heart; and especi- ally, when, as in this case, it ts not only thatof mest valuable territory, but gains for us the desideratum, so much appreciated by the mili- tary mind, of a commanding position and fuot- bold in the Guilt. But the whole people of the country, in one ‘Way and another, find themselves interested the annexation of this rich island, whereby its Ports will be opened to our manufactures and implements of husbandry; our corn, flour, and bacon; while we receive in return the sugar, coffee, and tobacco of St. Domingo. Itis felt, too, that the annexation ef St. Domingo will be the entering wedge for the acquisition of Cuba, And in turn of all the rich cluster of tropical ‘stands. In short, President Grant struck the key-note of American pride and expectation when he ini plies ‘We Lave a host of Carnival suggestions, among them the following :—“M.K.” thinks the Presi- dent should give a general order for the closing of the Departments on Carnival days, so that all the empleyes, female and male, can be ingured a holiday. “Fair Play” urges that “the bard-worked street car drivers and conductors, who are out fifteen and sixteen hours every day in all weather,” should have at least a half holiday each day to enjoy the scene with their wives and little ones. “W.C.” suggests that the surplus funds resulting from the Carni shal! be given to the poor; and “Mrs. FE. s” makes a suggestion in somewhat the same direc tion. She writes «Having seen many Carnivals in Europe, will you perm to mention a feature in one of them in France, which, im-the present state ot poor France, I should like to see adopted here. ‘There were certain knights, superbly arrayed, eypon chargers gaily eaparisoned, having red sacks attached to poles, by which ‘they reached a'l for pennies or moneys forthe poor. These, when full enough, were poured into a v gm ich rode a beautiful ueen of Charity dressed in female apparel.) A; this war known to be a feature, every one provided him. Self oxfherelf with a little, and tis, in the lar, wd to be here, wouk! make a good som famishing in’ France, even if only done os eday. The last partof the feature there was the presentation by the chevalier of a Jilite bouquet of flowers to any lady he chose, or to who gave freely. ‘These bouqnets were — = a Fag omg vehicle behind the queen, led to the horsemen when they came Sie by two beautiful maidens, the good work of charity rendering the service a pleasant one to them.’ Safety ‘of the ‘Temnessce. ‘The intelligence of the safe arrival of the amer Tennessee at San Domingo, given in extra this morning. caused a general feeling Of relief thtoughout the city. We have rer doubted the safety of the steamer, and have throughect branded the rumors adverse to her and groundless. A severe rebuke ts deserved by these who, for partisan or mis. Chievous ends, have endeavored to give cur- reney to the belief that the steamer bad foun- dered. +102- — We should hope that the appeals made to Washington business men in some of the papers not to be guilty of extortion upon visitors at carnival time are quite unneeded. It is desired Of all things to make a good name for Wash- ington, and the people of Washington, by the Carnival festivities, and it would be @ most sui- ida! poliey to give eur visitors the slightest auze to complain that they were tieeced or vidmoized here. But we Lave no ides that the bint is needed. The business people of the city have sbowm & general disposition to spend money for the carnival rather than to make money by it. For the present they are casting bread on the waters. When Washington city is made permanently attractive through its gaie- ties and comforts, and beeomes a place of national popalag resort, then our citizens wil! reap Some adequate return for their outlay, through the permanent growth and prosperity of the city. They do not propose to bazard great ends by any picayune policy of over- charging the unfortunate visitors they may get in their clutches on this occasion. — It will doubtless strike with ome surprise those who remember the towering and stately figure of General Scott to learn from Thurlow Weed’s last autobiographical chapter that in ts. Gceneral—or them Major Scott—was then so exceedingly slender that, in his own words, “the soldiers drew irreverent comparisons be- tween their commanding officer and a ramrod ona bean-pole. : Mu sch a he is gtven to the “enjorment of the goed things of life, Dr. Helmbold never forgets nis business, and he spares no effort to ensure its guceess. His last effort im this direction is to seoure the connection of Dr. Dyott with his Palace store. As Dr. Dyott may be called the father of the proprietary medicine business in this country, this arrangement wil! doubtless prove a great card all around. a Baltimore ore and New York are scolding becanse the street-car companies willgsalt their tracks, thus creating unhealthy and Seaguecablo slush. in New York there is an ordinance against the practice, but the street-ear folks manage to evade it. These street-railroad gentlemen have &@ Way of doing about as they j-lease. An exchange heads one of its sporting para. graphs “ The Champion Pigeon Shot!” bat the stem doesn’t explain how it came to be the champion pigeon, nor why it was shot;itenly goes on to tell abot some fellow who thinks he an shoot mere pigeons tied to a box than any- body else in the country. ——_—_-eee- ‘The circulation of the Philadelphia Ledger for tbe week ending February 11, 1871, footed ap toe enormous total of 454,50 copies, and had reached on Saturday of that week the number of 76,250 copies.
