Much en- thusiasm was evinced by all present, and none doubted the complete success of the affair. A committee, consisting of Messrs. Driv. added to the committee of arrangement Tur Hastinas- BRooxs Casr.—It was stated in this colamn yesterday that Mr. Hastings, of the New York Camm-rcial, on appearing before the Special Committee of the House, refused to be sworn or to testify in regard to the char; made by him in his paper, of making money by his position in Congress. It seems that the rea~ sons he gave for so doing were—first. that the charges made against Mr. Brooks in the Com- mernal Advertiser did not give sufficient ground for investigation; second, that, as the contro- pel for the benefit of his adversary, which object of his advereary in having the investiga- tte id third, that the resolution creating the ‘tee of investigation was so vague that it would be im ible to prove anything. It is arned that Mr. Hastings’ charges arise alto- gether from the position of Mr. Brooks as a government director in the Union Pacitic Kail- read, and if the a is inaugurated, nearly all the officers in that road, as well as the originators of the Credit Mobilier, will be sum- moned a5 witnesses, thus ‘&€n expensive and most protracted inquiry. ARY 18, 1871. TWO CENTS. Beciety. Mrs. Grant held her second afternoon recep- tion yesterday, and, a© might have heen antici pated, the occasion was 2 most brilliant one in every respect. Mrs. Grant was assisted by Mrs. Sedretary Boutwell, Miss Boutwell, Mrs. Robert Campbell, (wife of one of the Indian Commis- +i mers.) of St. Louis, Mrs. Parsons, also of St. 1 and Mrs. Geveral Dent. rs. Grant wore a black veivet dress, with train and high corsage, and rich lace about the neckof the dress. Her hair was simply arranged, ts. Boutwell wore brown silk, made Con Mrs. Campbell wore @ very heavy black velvet ‘ith train, @ corsage cut open at the throat, onmond jewelry, and a quantity of deep white pointe lace. Mrs. Parson's dress was a lilac trained silk, almost covered by an overdress of white pointe lace; her jewels were exquisite. Mrs. Gen. Dent wore a Diack silk dress, plainly made, aud Mise Boutwell a light brown silk. ‘The general display of toilets was very io ard the dresses of many of the guests we: votably rich in material and exquisite in style. Mrs. Blanche Butler Ames wore one of the most beantiful of visiting costaumes—a short suit made of three shades of bine si!k. Her ermine fore Dive bat with white feather wore very becoming to her fair complexion. Other cos- tumes, while equally handsome, were not so unique as this. Mrs. Senator Cole was also richly attired in a black rep silk, en train, with heavy black lace trimmings; black Lyon vel- vet cloak, with Leavy fringe trimmings; black velvet bonnet; hair crimped in front, curls be- hind; jewe Y¥ plain gold. Mrs. General Porter woraa rich pearl-colored satin dress, with overskirt of same, en panier, with train all trimmed with heavy biack lace; brown velvet bonnet, with plume of same color, and beauti- fa} white lace trimmings; hair plain; jewels of nid and jet. Miss Binnie Sherman wore a antiful blue satim dress, with black velvet basque; dove-colored velvet bonnet; hair plain, jewels, gold. Mrs.S.P. Brown wore anelegant peart-colored silk, with overskirt of same, en panier, with white lace trimmings; bonnet of same color as dress; hair plain. avd jewels of ad Many other dresses were equally handsome and conspicuous, but we have no room for even @ partial description, much as our laiy read- ers might be interested in reading it. Nor have we space for a list of the distinguished persons of both sezes present. We can only say that the attendance was unusually ta in- eluded nearly everybody in society at capt tal either permanently or temporarily. — The reception of the Secretary of the [nte- tior and Mrs. Deiano will not take place on Friday evenings as heretotere announced, bat on the evenings of Monday, « 30th and February 15th, Cards will be issned at an early day, it is understood, —Mrs. Celia Logan Kellogg read ber lecture on giivh Hearts and Homes before a select. party of friends at the residence of Mr. William tchards, on M street, last evening. As her name indicates, Mre. Kellogg is a member of the disting od Logan family, and ber friends predict from this effort, that, if she should tarn er attention in that direction, her success on the platform would soon equal that of her more widely known sister. — It may be & matter of interest to our lady readers here and elvewhcre to know that all of raut’s dresses for the present sear made inthe White House. If it be observed, thet they are less elaborate or tess georgeously gotten up as to style or trimming than rome Of foreign make, that circumstances should be attributed not to want of taste in the distinguished wearer, but to her economics! and patriotic impulses, It should pe borne in muind, furthermore, that Mrs. Grant's tastes and position alike incline her to a simple and modest style of personal adornment. — When there is # piece of delicate attention to be paid a lady, none can excel.a foreign gen- tleman in the manner of doing it. Not many days ago the lurthday of Madame de Catacaay recurred. Her husband, who is very much in Jove with bis beautiful and intelligent wite, pre- pared for her a delightfal surprise on her birth- day. He placed a band of music in her ing-room and awakened her by delicious mony. Soon a servant approached the mu: axratitied lady, and presented, with his maste: compliments, M’me de Catacacy’s monogi wrought in tlowere, with a tiny geld dolla every blossom. Atasociable dinner, to wh a tew friends were Mvited, the same day, tc, concealed in an inner room, delighted the com pany while dining. — Senator Chandler entertained at dinner |: evening the President and Mrs. Grant, tu: Secretary of State and Mrs. Fish, the Post master General and Mrs. Creswell, the Secre- of the Treasury and Mrs. Boutwell, the retary of the Navy, Baron and Baroness Gerolt, Sir Edward and Lady Thornton, aud Mr. and Mrs. Catacazy. The appointments ot the entertainment, it is perhaps needless to say, were entirely in keeping with the elegant eataly- lishment in'which it was giveu, and in every Way worthy the distingnished company present. — The reception of Mrs. Representative Inger- roll yesterday afternoon was attended by a very large and fashionabie company, which included distinguished representatives irom the foreign —, the ariny, the navy, and ofcial aud pr vate life. — Last evening a very large and select com. ny were assemble at the parsonage of the ‘oundry M. FE. Church, to celebrate the tit- teenth anniversary of the wedding of their es- teemed pastor, Rey. A. E. Gibson and his wife. The presents were rich, and consisted princi- pally of a handsome china tervice of 116 pieces, and other articles of value. The com- pany aiter partaking of bounteous refreshments, separated at @ late hour evidently well pleased with the evening's entertainment. REP¥AL oF THE INcOvE TAx.—Gen. Plesan- ton, Commissioner of Internal Hevenae, was before the House Committee of Ways and Means to-day, and advocated the repealof the income-tax, anda more liberal export system im distilled spirits and tobacco. It is deemed a hopetul sign for the repeal of the income tax that the Commissioner belicves it can be dit pensed with. NEw PesricaTions.—From Langran & Ogil- vie we have The Lady's Friend, the Atlantzc Monthly, and Demorest’s Mirror of Fathion tor February; and from J. Shillington the Miror of Foshion and Appleton's Journal for January 2s From Blanchard & Mohun, the publishers, we have “Thoughts on Female ‘Sabrage, and in Vindication of Womeu’s Trve Kights,” by Mrs. M. Further Developments—The Chicago Detective « Graduate ¥. the Old Capitol. It seems trom the New York papers that Feckler, who came on to that city representing Limeelf as a detective, and who promised to teli all abont the Nathan murder and produce the assassin—for a consideration—is not new to that sortof business. The New York Herald, atter describing his attempts to levy bleck mail in that city, says:—“‘ Feckler has @ somewhat in- teresting antecedent history in connectio: operations of this kind. FORTY-FIRST CONGRESS. This Afternoon’s Proceedings, wsbacare tls Weprrenax, January 1s. SENATE.—Mr. Sherman, trom the Finance Committee, reported back and asked to be dis- ebarged from the further conideration of the letter of Secretary of Treasary relative toatax on the forty-five milliows of scrip dividend of the New York Central railroad. The committee was discharged. Ar. Fenton, frem the Finance Committee, re- , ported without amendment a bill to provide for redemption of copper and other toxen coin Passed, ater an explanation by Mr. Fem that the bill had received the approval of Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Morton asked leave to introduce a reso- lution which wasjread for injormation prorid: ing for the appointiment of ‘2 SELECT COMNITTEE OF FIVE MEM to which shal! be referred the docum papers recently laid before the Senate resident ip reference to the Southern States, and that send for acter alleged to have been ern States. Mr. Bayard objected. Mr. Morton then moved to take from ¢ the papers accompanying the Presid: sage, with a view to- their reference to a com- mittee. ‘The motion was agreed to, when Mr. Morton to refer them to a speca! committee. Bir. Casserly moved ss am amendment to refer the % to ibe Judiciary Gonaraittee. Mr, Wilsun said frem efticial sources, such a record of crime as no christian or civilized land during the last five years could present. What Congress now wanted fo do was to PUT DOWN THE KU" LUX @RGANIZaTION of the South, which had all the semblance of | the old legalized code #ysten: Mr. Warncr hoped aspecial committee would be appointed, by whom some remedy would be devised for the protection of life and property aud a gvarantce ef the free exercise of the rightsot citizenship. He reiminded the Senate that upon the announcement in the Senaie | ebout a year and a@ balf betore of the death of Mr. Hinds, of Arkansas, who wagassasinated because or his i opinions, he (Warner) bad asserted that while the government had shown its power to cruth rebellion it had yet failed to sbow its power to protect its citizens, Mr. Casserly looked apon this more as an efiort to prejudge die case before even the papers were opened in the Senate, and that the action of the Senate was predetermined, and too palpaple for anybody to do: was Caicalated to stir up and kee BECTIONAL HATE dit was another effort to build up the waning tunes of the republican party.
