There was « liberal display of beauty, aud the party was a decided success, Democeavic Cavecs ox THE SAN Dowco (UxsTION.—The democratic members of the Houre held « cat.cns last evening in the room of the Pacific Raiiroads Committee, at the Capi tol, for the purpose of considering the San Domingo question. ‘The leading mem*ers of that side of the House gave their views upon the matter, and it was nvanimousiy decided to Ofpose the ‘annexation project. ‘They admitted that the ‘manifest destiny” doctrine of the democratic party has been the a¢.uisition of territory, but urged that the objections to San Domingo were too great to be overcome. Some of the objections urged by various members were that Dominica only represented half the island, that its population was a half-civilized and ignorant negro race: that the scheme was shrouded in corruption; that the Senate bad carefully considered the mutter ut the last ses sion, and rejected it by a large majority; that nothing bad been developed since to warrant additional iuquiries upon the subject; and that the isiand was not contiguous tw the United States, and, therefore, the reasons for its an- nexation were not to be consilered as urgent as these for the annexation of Alaska. ss Whisky Frauds in the West. a Mr. Orville Grant to the President.
