Henry Ward Beecher has an article im the Chrisnan Union on the Grant-Sumner matter that undoubtedly expresses the views of thought- ful Republicans throughout the country. Re- €arding a speech like this, says Mr. Beecher, simply as an ungrounded attack on a faithful public servant, it can hardly be too earnestly deprecated. Itis the curse of our politics that no degree of purity of character exempts a public man from all manner of base imputa- tions. It is too much to hope to be soon deliv- ered from this style of warfare on the part of mere political backs and partisan journals. ‘+ But when a man esteemed among the fore- most im the Senate, honored for personal in- tegrity, accustomed to lead at home and to be beard with respect abroad, when such a mao launches against an honest President violent accusation, of offensive and dangerous crimes, what security is left for honor and.di dignity in the personal relations of politics? But this is by no means = whole of the mischief in the present —_ direct tendency of Mr. Sumner’s -s fans to create @ biter feud ameng the involves a diversion of time and strength fro: the public service to party broils, which is in itselt @ serious impediment to good legisistion. But such a feud would have still worse results. ‘The evils of @ chrowic discordance the legislative and executive powers—the friction, the incapacity, the deadlock upon all ic measures—are but too well known tous. And on the mere grou round of party expediency, what worse could wished to the republican party than that they should throw ‘ay the friend- ship of a President who is with them at heart, and break up their own forces by attacks on chief strong in the confidence of the country? Mr. Beecher beli Lowever, that there is little or no response to the temper of Mr. Sam- ner's speech, and that there is no prospect what- ever of a breach between the President and the great body of the republican Congressmen; “but thar itis only beeanse Mr. Samner has tailed to animate others with his own spirit.” In another way, however, Mr. Beecher fears urfortnnate results, and that is from the fact that from want of harmony between the Presi. ent and the chairman of the Committee, on Foreign Relations, the hopeful prospect of set- tling the Alabama claims «uestion may be de- feated.
