ee a EVENING STAR. _DOUBLE SHEET. --Edttor. cRosBY s. NOYES. oo tC ireulation i in the District w aNHINGT ON OITY SATURDAY ....... December 24, 1870. ur Double Sheet. rs of advertising that compel us | et again to-day afford us | the ame time to pres:nt to | r p unusually large and interesting | amonnt of fresh general reading. Among the | readable articles to be found in to-day’s paper | written for Tus Stag by Jones Kodrigue, a favorite contributor : n interesting de- scription of Clark Miils’ National Bronze Foundry, telling how our statues are made, and all about the proposed Nationa! Lincoln Mon- ument; a capital Christmas story entitled “My Holidays;” a number of graphic sketches, poetical articles, valuable domestic recipts, , and the usual variety of news, ip, &e a wonderfalls rich and varied mae —— “Ne Paper op Mouday As Monday will be observed as a legal holiday Tax Evanine STAR will not be issued that day, wnless something of unusual importance should tramspire requiring the publication of an extra. ‘This omission is male up as nearly as the break nthe regular publication of a newspaper can be by the double sheet which we furnish to-day, with an usually large and attractive variety of reading matter. — Tum Sram desires in this connection to tender the congratulations of the season to its many and steadfast patrons, and to wish for them many and happy returns of the joyous event. “Their good health, unt their families; may they live long, unt prosper”! sh — ceo The Reduced Fare. We stated the other day that the Baltimore and Uhio Kailroad Company had reduced their fare between here and Baltimore to the extent of the State tax upon passengers, which, under the recent decision of the Maryland courts, is itlegal, and which the company is, therefore, pot bound to pay. Since then it has been as- serted that the railroad company have not reduced the fare, but continue to collect the fall amount. We find by inquiry, however, that the fare has really been reduced to $1.2) between the two cities, and correspondingly | between way stations; butin @ change of this | sort, affecting the public so beneficially and the company so creditably, the schedale of reduced rates should be thoroughly advertised in the pa- pers. A little expenditure for printer's i way isa wixe economy for railroad companies. And by the way, the Virginia railroads stand very much in their own light in this respect We are daily beset by inquiries that we have. neither time nor ably to answer, as to the rar- ring schedules on the Orange and Alexandria road, the Loudoun, the Manassas Gap, Hamp- shire ron¢ snd other roads. It is astonishing n view of the amount of travel south passing through Washington, that the different railroad companies in Virginia fall to give any informa- tion through the Washington papers or othor- wise concerning their time-tables, Gc. Kail- road managers of this sort in the North and West, weuld be considered very poor business t men. oe A. very fall vote was polled at the election in j Georgia on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday | of this week, and, although the result through- | out the State is not yet certainly known, yet the dispat: hes so far received indicate a victory for the democrats, who have probably elected four or fve members of Congress and secured a | majority of the Legisiatare. Paine aud Me- | Intire, democrats, are probably elected from | the first district, the frst named to the 424 and the last named to the fist Congress. Wright, in third district, democrat, is thought certainly elected to the dist Congress. The democrats | carry the Sfth district by over 1,0) majority. electing S. A. Corker and P.M. Dabace, the | first named to the 42d and the latter to the 41st | Congress. P.M. B. Young is elected to tha 42.4 Copgress from the seventh district by abort 3,000 majority. There is @ marked charze in some few counties im the State, since 184%, Rich- mond county, where the democrats are now re- ported to have 800 majority, gave more than 1.00? republiean majority two years ago. so ‘The suggestions of “H. K.” elsewhere in re- commending that our high officials should re- <eive their friends this year, as the Speaker of the House bas done for many years, without forma! card invitations and without furnishing refreshments, are sensible. ss0e--— Virginia elects a United State Senator March ",and Alexander H. H. Stuart, W. F. Suth- erlin and Edward Pendleton are mentioned as porsible candidates to contest the place with Senator Johnson. Tas Post Orrice—The eas: The news of FE po-tunaster bas created great excitement here among the republicans, and great indignation wexpressed ip certain «uarters inst Sena tors Harris and Kellogg. It is authoritatively ant ounced that @ resolution will be introdacet merting of the Legislature demanding their 1¢ ignation. <2e- vee THE New ORLEANS ‘ew rieans Picayune mchard’s rejection a» w Roe UNDAY next Deer * jOuN ee « ‘HLER r PILGRIM USION MissioN— wees wil be heid ever OABeAte in = ofthe Nationa) Base Ball Clab, 8 streot.c 15th. ar $y « : ner < re re om next TURSDAY Doc. i Moers will be held aud other im il be transac te CHAS. & SaRcHT, ey ose ah, are hereby notiti ‘some. duly verifisd; ur attorces RK Kiliote S24 Geek ae oe TURPDAY, Jeruaas 34, 12 AMES ©.
