Twe Mem Perish in the Flames. Werth of P Over $100,000 Acoke-r roperty The Origin of the Fire—Rapid Spread of the Fla of tance by Dealers—M Sor Taeir Relief—The Coroner s Ingu ‘and Incidents at the Fire. About a quarter before one o'clock on Sunday morning @ fire broke out near the west end of the Center Market House, and spread with sach rapidity that within two hours after- wards the entire original structure, with the stalls, sheds, scale house, cook's shop, and mar- ket master’s office, was 8 mass of ruins, entail- ing a large lors jon all the dealers im the main line of buildings from 7th to 9th streews. Those who occupied the sheds recently erected on the line of 9th Peansy! jivania avenue, and a few in the sheds on the corner of 9th and Ca- pal streets—two points where the fice did not reach—were the only ones who escaped damage. WS ee a Quite a number of persons appear ve covered the fire about the same time, but so conflicting are statements in regard to it that it is disticult to tell how it originac:d—some ig thatit first broke out in half a dozen laces at the same moment, and others claim- ing that it spread from ome Int about the middle of the old butchers’ market, between and 9th streets. The latter statement, on weighing all the evidence, seems to be the most probable. The market men had ali left the prong” aceeee 12 o’clock, and the two watch- men, ‘1 Young and Joseph Beed, had turned off the gas, with the exception of some half adozen gas jets, which are always kept burning through the night; and at that hour everything seemed secure, as usual. Mr. Youngstates that about fifteen minutes 2 o'clock, Bressnahan (who keeps a fruit stand on the outside of the market, at the cor ner of 7th street and the avenue, and who o: cupied one of the little receases about midway of the butcher's market, between Sth and 9th streets, in the wall at the middle entrance, as @ storeroom for his chestnuts, peanuts, fruit, &c.,) was the last person seen to leave the mar- kethouse: that he (Young) saw the flamos shoot up trom this little room and communicate with the roof of the market-house come fifteen or twenty minutes after Bressnahan leit there; that Reed and himself (Young) arrived at the doors of this place at the same moment and at- sempted to burstit open, but by that time the roof was all in tiames, and finding that the tire had got beyond their control they next tried to save all they could from the stands. Mr. is equally certain the fire started at this point. Mr. Bressnahan states that he commenced to pack up at his stand as soon as the crowd from the theaters had passed down the Avenue; and after emptying the fire and ashes from his hand furnace tor roasting chestnuts, he placed it in an empty flour barre}, and wheeled it, with the rest of his stard furniture, to the room above described; and after lighting acoal oil Iampat one of the gas burners in the market-hoase, he proceed to pack away the rest of the things, and after doing so, ard seeing all was secure, ex- om tongs the lamp about a quarier afer 12 o'clock, and left for his home on Capitol Hill. After passing the Capitol he saw the tire aud heard the alarm—this was about fifteen minates beiore one o'clock. and the time agrees with Mr. Young’s statement. itis possible that Bressnahan may not have extinguisbed the lamp, or he may have left tire in bis forrace, which communicated with some- thing combustible, and after it reached the roof, which was as dry as tinder, spread in every di- rection. This morning, Mr. ‘Thomas Young, the private watchman, mate @ statement before Major Superintendent. of Police, as to his knowledge of the origin of the fire which is sab- stantial ¢ same as that stated by him last evening and given above. RAPID SPREAD OF TRR FLAME: Mr. Young further states that the @ ran a’ong the root about as fast as a man cin walk, ard when it reached the tar and felt roof of the new sheds, supported ly tall wooden posts, the fire Literally jumped along the entire line. At the same time it spread down 9th street and commuricated with the cook-shops, which burned like powder, andco on dow and Lee’s teed stand, tb ow Boyd, were hucned to death in attempting to sove tome beles ot hay trom the flames. A GENERAL ALARM was sounded, and the entire Fire Department Were nickly on the spot, but very little property Was saved. As soon asthe fire was seen specia| Officer Thomas Young ran to the Central g {- house to cause an alarm to be turned in trom box 25. The coearene Was out of order, and no communication cou'd be had with headyuarters, Officers rau out to strike the next neacest box, but some of their confreres were before them, and, as stated at headquarters, box 34 (Bank of Washington) and 29 (7th and E streets) were rang in Simuitaneously, 29 being obtained by the instrument first. Franklin No.2, Union No. 1, and Colombia No. 3 got to work on the western side of the Lemar, while South Washington No. 4 was stationed by Chief Holmes to work on 7th street side to protect the property, on the east side of that street, as well as to fight the flames which rapidly ig 1 yy from tue west. ‘The steamer Henry Addison, from Georgetown, Was on the ground, and ‘did good <ervice. Heavy streams of water were svon distributed — the burning mass, but without avail. The immense area covered by the flames was too greet for the department tu cover, and notwith- standing their exertions it was impossible tostay the progress of the conflagration. E THE POLICE were vigilant in guarding against depredations, and several arie:ts were mate of par: ‘ng into the stands and rifling mone) Xe. Some few dealers succeeded in getting off some of their property, but the fire running through £0 1a¢ drove them from th and many HAIRBREAPTH BSCATES were made among the falling tim Trveweether and his wile, whotkept ng cvse in the old guardhouse, barely escayed wih their lives, having to 'eave without dress- ing atter being awakened. be firemen worked manfu! as also the Police, several of them making very narrow es- cay Foreman Hurule, of No. 2,hadthe back or coat burned; and 80 excessive was the heat at 7th street that the paint on the wheels of No. 4 engine was blistered, and it was with ditt- culty the apparatus was removed to a safe dis- tance irom the burning building. Quite a commendab'e act was performed by Lieutenant John F. ny with Sergeant John- son, Officers Daily and Arnold and others. In the store of Messrs. Bacon & Co., at tae corner of 7th street, it was known there was a quantity of powder, andthe heat becoming so excessive it wes thought best by him to remove it. Lieut. While the members ef the Franklin company were at work on the buildings occupied a+ tee d stores and cook shops on 9th street, a number of men were at work in Jones’ feed store (a two story frame building) removing its contents. Among them were + Solomon Hammond, a young Man well known inthe northern part of the city, who followed the basiners of huckst ing, avd who slept at Mr. Buckley’s, Just op2 site; and Mr. Reuben A. Bord, who has been emp'oyed as agent of the Grand Army Journal, and who resided with his brothers and sisters on F street south, near ith street, both of whom Jost their lives. Mr. Hammond, on being awakened by the alarm, hastily arose and pat- ting on nothing but his, luirt and pants, hastened over to the sheds, mo ge ee the street some or Mrs. Atherton’s family, who were escaping, aud knowing that there was alarge amount of feed in Jones’ house went to the door with others, (among them officer E..J. Davall and Mr. Jos. ‘eed,) and burst the door in. Hammond was seen to bring out two bags of meal, and re- turned the third time, and got behind a bale of hay, where Boyd is supposed to have been at the time attempting to get it out. While the two men were thus engaged Mr. Keid and Officer Duval, who also were inside the building, heard a cry from the outside, “Get ont there, the place is tumbling in,” and they ran out through the tlames, being somew! hed. Mr. Duval went to the rear ot th building to get at the two men, still inside, by the back deer; wat co qnickly did the flames spread that be and others were unable to get near the building. Messrs. A. Seitz and F Eiwood, having at the time the pipe of No. 2 steamer, were intormed that the men were in the building, and played on it until the tlames were so tar subdued that an at- tempt could be made fto get the bodies out One of the bodies was found tying on its face, with the back terribly burned, and the skal! mashed ip, the brains protradiug. This body was atonce taken to the central guardhow and some time afterwards the other was brougat out, not eo much disfigured as the first. Yes- terday Dr.S. J. Todd, deputy coroner, visited the bodies, and the police having tound beneatli the last body removed a number of papers, it was by this means identitied as that of Mr. Boyd, as also by the teeth. There was nothing on the other execpt a piece of pantaloons stuff of a peculiar pattern, and a small plain gold ring. Mr. Hammond not having been seen since he left the restaurant, the rumor soon was read that the other body was his, and darin, the day his father, mother and brother visite: it, but could not identify it. During the arter- noon, however, it was fully identitied 1d the father of the deceased bad it conve: to his residence. After the inquest held by Dr. Todd, the body of Mr. Boyd was given to his family. TRE CORONER’S INQUESTS. At5 o'clock yesterday afternoon, Dr. 8. J. Todd, as Deputy Coroner, held an inquest, Justice W. C. Harper being foreman of the jury. Miss Barbara Rabe, Miss Pliebe Ann Atherton, Jobn ©. F. Atherton, Jr., Kichard H. Adam- Reuben B. Poole, Joseph Williams, Augus- tus Seitz, foreman of No.2 engine company, k Et of No.2, Officer E. J. Davail, and Lieut. C.M. Skippon fully identified the body of Hammond, and some ot them testitied to the facts above stated; also that heavy tim- bers were lying on the bodies when they were discovered. Mr. Chas. A. Boyd, Mr. W. N. Cop2land, Lieut. Noonan and James W. Corry identitied the body of Boyd. The jury found a verdict in each case as fol- lows:— That the said Hammond (or Bosd) came to his deat between the hours of 1 and 2 o'clock & m. on the isth of December, 1870, in that portion of the Center Market-nouse, on vib street, occupied by Alfred Jones as a feed store; they turther find that the cause of death wa: the burning of his body in the conflagration the said market-honse buildings, while engage ins moving goods therefrom.” SCENES TO-DAY. Ason yesterday, hundreds of people are at work in the r thering up the half-burned bacon, wasted 8, potatoes and old iron, Ke Yesterday colored people could be seen in every part of the city carrying to their home: articles trom the fire, and to-day the search the debris is still in progress. HISTORY OF THE BUILDING. ‘The tirst building for market purposes on this site, and which was erected on the 7th street side, was authorized by act of the City Coun cils on the 6th of October, 1802, and on Dec. 12, 1803, an act was passed granting the privilege of selling on Sunday to the colored people who brought their pouitry, eggs, opposums, fruit, €., to town on those In 1359, th buteh- hand 9th streets, was nd about the same time the watchouse, ‘boure and fish market were erected. In %, the market-house was taken pos session of by the Snow rioters, they hold- ing it for two or three days. Angust 11, 1811, a whirlwind, or @ water spout rather, passed up the caval and scattered destruction in its course, carrying boards and joists high up in the air, and in one instance taking up a boat and letting it down on another boat some hundred yards from it. This whirlwind came in contact with the west end of the Center Market-house, and lifted the roof off, carrying away a portion of it, and displacing the Test, 80 that it had to be allre-set.
