PRIDAY............December 16, 1870. Surratt. Joby IT. Surratt isdenounced i» various qaar- ters for eppearing as alectarer, and with sin mence by the New med so friendly to him that be pro- 2 in Canada, to send to it his defense bay posed, wl ® York papers stating that the reason of the World's aseauit i* that the Democracy of New York, as he is sasured by afriend “who stands high im the political arena,” is so rotten and in h & critical condition that it is obliged to re- i diate him to save itself. ratt says that he will not be contee “by the howlings and carpings of those who would be my friends if they dared.” £00 taste of portions of Surratt’s lecture may In conclusion, be questioned, and especially his tirade against | pre ve -Tudge who tried him, and the fippancy with | Please se whic eh he dwells upon his love adventures in Canada in the same breath with his refer- ence to his mother’s death upon the gallows, vat it is dificult to see the reason for the larious outburst against bim of the World, the Cincinnati Enquirer, and some other papers of like party affiliations. Really the serious defect in the Surratt leetare was not what he said, but what he failed tosay. He, if any one, was ina position to clear ap bis mother’s memory and establ sl her innocence, if that were possible, and it would have seemed a filial and creditable sct in bim to have appeared before the public im her defense. But it will be noticed that throughout his lecture he is silent in regatd to the part she took or did not take in the plottings ef the conspirators. He thus puts himself in the attitude of making an egotistical defense of himseif and of leaving her memory te take care f itself; and at the same time an impression is conveyed to the public adverse to her innocence. -see- * Dell Times. Mr. Garrett, in his address to the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company the other day, made arather rose-colored exhibit of the in- crease of the commerce of Baltimore, but the Go-ette points out that with that increase there as not been s general increase ef prosperity. ‘Trade has been for the past eighteen months unusaally dull, in many respects, worse even than ip i861. Rents have declined, prices have been lower, sales have been fewer than usual, and there has been, for a long time past, great complaint that the stagnation of the ordinary trade of the city has been most oppressive. ‘This, no doubt, was owing, in the first instance, io the natural decl:ne from war to peace prices, and this winfer is due, in a great measure, to the impoverished condition of Virginia aud the disasters sustained by the flood, and partly to the low price of cotton in the southern States: | For, after all, as the Gazerte says, ne matter | what the western connections may do for Bal- timore in the future, it is the southern ones which sustain it im the present. Also that paper proceeds to enumerate as among the needs of Baltimore, comfortable prevision for travellers, and suitable accommo. lations for them when they reach there; a tloat- ing population to give life and activity to the streets, to sustain retail trade, and to support places of amusement. ‘Thee are alvo the needs of Washington and | to these may pe added one that Baltimore has «pplied for hersel’, and that is manufactures. Galtimore is always able to tide over a dull season by her strial enterprises. but Wash- ington has very little to show in this way, and what she has, we are sorry tosay, are not prop- erly encouraged by ourown people. The glass works, for instance, recently established here through the enterprise or Mr. Purdy, are turn- ing out glass ware at prices less than they can be purchased elsewhere, and yet the proprietor has the complaint to make that he cannot find customers in Washington for bis wares, and is obliged tosend them to Baltimore forsale. Very likely our Washington dealers will purchase them there at a considerable advance, just as a citizen lately purchased a Washington-made car- rage in a Philadelphia establishment at a large advance upon the price here. We must learn to encourage our own, if we want to build up manufacturing enterprises calculated to make the city somewhat independent of government business for eupport. What Strengthens a Party? Simple minded persons have long. supposed that an honest and faithful administration of public affairs was a good thing, even from a party point of view; bat according to the New Vork Commercial advertiser it is not. Comment- ing on the appointment of Gen. Pleasonton as commissioner of internal revenue, that paper says: He is a well informed man and has no taint onhis character. Me will bring no particular strength to the administration or to the He will, Lowever, make an efticient ite omt: cer, and an honest one. bis of Gen. Pleasonton’s nomination may not be particularly gratifying to the partisan wire pullers, but we still think that if he makes “an efficient public officer, and an honest one,” he 1 most decidedly strengthen both the admin. istration and the party. The tax paying people haven't lost their respect for those qualities, whatever the politicians may thin Alexander Dar, Pinas or Dumas pers, ashe was sometime! d, the well known Freaeh novelist and dramatist, died at Dieppe of par- alysis on Wedn jast. His father, General Alexander Davy Dowas, was the son of an Af- ‘cam woman named Trnnette Dumas, by the Marquis de la Palletene, a wealthy French ® lanter of St. Domingo, and was taken to France when 3 boy, received a good education, and on some distinction in the French republican armies, one of which be commanded. The de- deased novelist was born at Villers-Cotterets, in the department of Aisne, on the 2ith of July, 'w2, and was consequently in the sixty-ninth year of bis age at the time of his death. His literary activity was immense, and he produced numerous novels, dramas, memoirs, &c., bat the books upon which bis fame will cuseily rest are * Monte Cristo” and the “ Three ciuards- n.” though bis popularity waseven greater eal a# a dramatist than asa writer of novels.
