We propose to give advertisements of this kind a conspicuous position, and to call due attention to them otherwise, and therefore dealers will | find it greatly to their advantage to be repre- sented in this holiday directory. In the suitof the State of Maryland against the Baltimore and Obie Railroad Company for one-fifth of the receipts for passenger travel on the Washington branch, on trial in Baltimore for several days past,a verdict was given to- day for the defendant, and the court decided that the tax on passengers was unconstitutional, and that every passenger who has paid fare ! could recover from the company one-fifth of the amount so paid. seee- Very Coot.—The Washington and George- town horse railroad, it is understood, wiil shortly memorialize Congress to anthorize the inerease of fare, to six cents on the ground that under the existing law it isnot | possible for the company to declare even the al est dividend This is the coolest thing yet. ‘The railroad company certainly oughtto go into the ice business. There would be no more com- plaint of short creps. Why, it is searcely two weeks since the company declared a dividend equal to an annual dividend of above ten per i cent.!
